Schiff does an amazing job of really getting into the weeds of this particularly bizarre piece of American history, separating truth from fiction and presenting a clear-eyed portrait of just how something like this happened. Allowing her stories to come alive, the narratives that she creates flow effortlessly along, capturing a number of different themes and ideas.

The only reason I’m not awarding The Ex Hex a full five stars is that the story loses a bit of steam midway. Now Rhys Penhallow, descendant of the town’s founders, breaker of hearts and still irritatingly gorgeous, is back. Vivienne "Vivi" Jones had dated Rhys Penhallow for three months during the summer, and he broke her heart. She manages this with expert precision, whilst also making sure that her books are well paced every step of the way. This curse soon proves to be more than she thought it would be, as her small town of Graves Glen is soon under attack from killer wind-up toys, angry ghosts, and talking cats.I have spoilery thoughts about the worldbuilding that I won’t discuss (because: spoiler) but I wish the magic system had been fleshed out a little more. For one, it was Wales, so rain literally came with the territory, Rhys understood that, but he’d driven from London that morning through sunshine with the occasional cloud. I love the stellar banter from the resentment that the two main characters still have for each other, making their moments always a barrel of laughs. Vivi's constantly thinking about this fool, from mentally complaining that he probably hasn't gotten wine-drunk and stalked her on social media over the years (she has done that to him for some reason), to lamenting the fact that Rhys knows how upset she is over the curse because he saw her do magic and she just Doesn't Do That. With a lot more to come in the future as well, she definitely will not be finishing any time soon, as her writing career builds from strength-to-strength.

Please, for the love of God, if I ever pine this hard after a man I dated at 19 (for only three months!
Rhys invites Vivi to see the ley lines, and when his attempt to charge them results in catastrophic dark magical energy flooding Graves Glen, Vivi realizes her hex was real. Nevertheless, there's no denying that the second half of the book started to get tiresome and draggy. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late. I was too busy staring blankly at the novel, trying to understand why a grown-ass woman cared so much about this guy who, reportedly, broke her heart. The chemistry he had with Vivi combined with the top banter and witchy goodness had me very quickly obsessed with this book!

This interest of hers would develop for throughout much of her life, as she would come to create the style she’s largely known for today. He's as interesting as a pretty rock (it's beaten into your head that he's good-looking), and her whole character revolves around this fling from almost a decade ago. In this book, the author clearly shows us how knowledge without wisdom can be perilous through the character of Vivienne Jones. The stories that Hawkins has created are equal parts engaging and entertaining, providing a sense of escapism and excitement, as well as having something deeper to say.
