About this deal

We at Penguin Random House Australia acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Custodians and the first storytellers of the lands on which we live and work. The central character in all the books is Nick Stone, a tough ex-SAS operative working as a 'K' on deniable operations for British Intelligence. In Northern Ireland he spent two years working as an undercover operator with 14th Intelligence Group, going on to become an instructor.

Down to the Wire (Nick Stone, book 20) by Andy McNab

While some action is a word perfect repeat of previous methods of hand to hand combat, it both feels familiar in an 'old friend ' way and is quite a likely scenario for a desperate exSAS operative to revert to what has worked before. Andy McNab has written about his experiences in the SAS in two bestselling books, Bravo Two Zero (1993) and Immediate Action (1995). I always find Andy McNab [Nick Stone] great escapism, and this one was better than many because he was not geting bossed around by women or hooked into a relationship, which often brings the plot down to the mundane.

A sinister cult Tasked with rescuing the daughter of one of America's richest families from the grips of a sinister cult, Nick Stone expects his latest mission to be quick and straightforward. Nick soon discovers himself at the heart of a chilling cyber conspiracy that threatens war with Russia and the very existence of the Western alliance and following a shock diagnosis his body is failing fast.

It’s almost like he’s had a reset over the last two or three books and events from before that are irrelevant. From the day he was found in a carrier bag on the steps of Guy's Hospital in London, Andy McNab has led an extraordinary life. McNab is the author of seven fast action thrillers, highly acclaimed for their authenticity and all Sunday Times bestsellers. Its the last in the Nick Stone series and AM has written it like that too, almost as if he couldnt be bothered to think up a decent enough plot line to pension Nick off. I am a fast reader and the fact that (I think) this is my first ever 1 star review reflects how I feel I wasted 5 days struggling through this (its NO page turner. From the bestselling author of Bravo Two Zero, Andy McNab, comes an explosive new thriller that is so close to home, it will leave you wondering what is fact and what is fiction!

Down to the Wire by Andy McNab | Goodreads

Started off as a good read but fell off in my eyes when he reached the settlement where Mary ‘was being held’. this assignment, is the self learning, reflection and awakening, that his bog life however long or short in the future, could be different, if he consciously choses that path. During the Gulf War he commanded Bravo Two Zero, a patrol that, in the words of his commanding officer, 'will remain in regimental history for ever'. What he didn’t expect is to have a journey, an internal one, when he has the environment to think through his life and what he really cares about in life. Published in 1997, Remote Control was hailed as the most authentic thriller ever written and has sold over half a million copies in the UK.Tasked with rescuing the daughter of one of America's richest families from the grips of a sinister cult, Nick Stone expects his latest mission to be quick and straightforward.

As a member of 22 SAS he was at the centre of covert operations for nine years - on five continents. I'm left wondering if AM had a book contract to fulfil as its the last in the series and this was him getting back at the publishers. But there are deadly complications - not least that Nick soon discovers himself at the heart of a chilling cyber conspiracy that threatens war with Russia and the very existence of the Western alliance . The BBC's film of Bravo Two Zero, starring Sean Bean, was shown on primetime BBC 1 television in 1999 and released on DVD in 2000. Awarded both the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) and Military Medal (MM) during his military career, McNab was the British Army's most highly decorated serving soldier when he finally left the SAS.
