About this deal

Removed from this context and all of the cultural baggage it carries, would the Vessel itself produce as much outrage? Perhaps not. Imagine it looming at the edge of a nature preserve instead, as an observation point for a place that can be enjoyed by the whole of a city’s population (with an elevator that goes all the way to the top.) Like Eliasson’s Rewriting, this spiral staircase by artist Peter Coffin won’t get you anywhere at all – and in fact, you’d have a hard time even climbing the steps, given the impossible angles. But the sculpture is more concerned with the beauty of the staircase’s shell-like shape. Saatchi Gallery says “Through his humorous constructions, Coffin bridges art history and everyday experience, subverting the preconceptions of both.” Cedar Stairs by Ursula Von Rydingsvard

That would be because the bottom portion of the tower is very heavy and very strong. From there, the railing walls, functioning as light but sturdy structural beams intended to resist forces acting on the structure, including gravity, and keep it stable, extend out and into the air. They prevent the peculiar structure from dangerously sagging or tipping. You can see the room where Sarah Winchester died on the tour, as well as the Daisy Room, where Mrs. Winchester was trapped for several hours after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. According to legend, Mrs. Winchester slept in a different room each night so that the ghosts couldn't find her, but unfortunately, the servants couldn't find her either after the earthquake. Stairway to nowhere is a complete set of teaching resources designed around an interesting and unusual photograph with activities to activate your students' higher level critical thinking skills. If it weren’t for the vibrant red color, Do-Ho Suh’s staircase would seem as if it were barely there, diaphanous and airy, suspended from stainless steel tubes. It’s part of a series called Reflections, sheer nylon reproductions of spaces that are meaningful to the artist but seem surreal, losing tangibility, almost like a fading memory. Revolutions by Michel de Broin Sarah Winchester didn't always want to build a haunted mansion. Born in 1839, Sarah Pardee was one of the social stars of New Haven, Conn. Although she only stood 4 feet 10 inches, she was known for her beauty and her sparkling personality.

But even if most don’t visit, I suspect it will still become one of those rare artworks that lodges in the public’s consciousness, conjuring thoughts about real-world problems. A friend who came with me proclaimed that visiting Hudson Yards had made him more certain than ever that it is time for serious reform in this country. “They should tax this place into oblivion,” he said. Just before I accepted my job at HowStuffWorks.com, I took a cross-country road trip. I was spending a few days in San Francisco, and I kept seeing advertisements for the Winchester Mystery House. I was so intrigued that I made a detour into San Jose to see the famous home, and I was very glad I did. The ghosts, the steps leading nowhere and the recurring motif of the number 13; what's not to love? Then, a mere four months into my tenure as a writer, I was assigned this article. No one on the staff knew that I had just been to the Winchester Mystery House, so I have to think that some mysterious force was behind the coincidence -- Sarah Winchester herself, perhaps? The wider mixed-use Hudson Yards will deliver about 1,180,000m 2 of development in 16 skyscrapers, including a new tower by Foster + Partners. Grant, Kay. "Winchester Mystery House." TravelLady Magazine. March 2005. (March 26, 2008) http://travellady.com/Issues/March05/1300WinchesterMysteryHouse.htmSome people think that these touches were designed to confuse the evil spirits that were haunting Mrs. Winchester. Believing that ghosts would get lost on stairs that went nowhere or accidentally step out of a door that went outside, Mrs. Winchester might have deliberately installed these weird touches. Over the past couple years, when I happened to be in the neighborhood, I looked at the monstrosity under construction with a mixture of disgust and horrified glee, in awe that so much money was being spent to build something so blithely tone deaf and, at the same time, so utterly banal—a huge network of staircases leading to nowhere. I know I am not alone in that feeling. Vessel has been very fun to hate from afar. And so, heading over to Hudson Yards this past Saturday, I was quite excited to finally set foot on the beast and walk some of its roughly 2,500 steps.

It’s fun to hate from afar, but what do visitors have to say about it? Here’s a report from Andrew Russeth of Art News:The useless stairs might have a simple explanation; the stairs were likely a part of the original house that Mrs. Winchester bought, and when she started adding on to the home, she covered up the stairs. Whether it was accidentally or on purpose, Mrs. Winchester usually covered up her mistakes by just continuing to build around them. Because she had no master plan for the house, her architectural ideas didn't always work out. Since she had no deadline for completion, she'd either tear down the mistake or cover it up with something else. I went to the new 25 Billion dollar #HudsonYards complex, on the very far West Side of Manhatran yesterday. Essentially it is a suburban mall without parking. Very crowded, but seemingly few shoppers. Wonder what will happen when the novelty wears off.— Frank Didik (@FrankDidik) April 1, 2019 Developers and city officials have long seen the “Far West Side,” which used to be little more than an open pit full of trains, as a blank canvas, with Hudson Yards only emerging as the victor after the death of a dream to host the Olympics in this spot. The platform upon which it’s built is certainly a feat of engineering, and advocates note that the project will add 4,000 new apartments, a school, parkland and as many as 55,000 jobs to the city. The completed portion is only the eastern half; the rest will be under construction through 2024. Nothing not to love about the jangly sounds of the Vovos, who blend catchy melodies with whip smart lyrics. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 25, 2021 go to album Never thought I would say this but it probably would have been preferable to build an 80,000 seat football stadium that would be empty 80% of the year than the horrendous offering to the mall gods that #HudsonYards appears to be https://t.co/ybAfk8z8W2— Jon Auerbach (@JAAuerbach) April 1, 2019

Stairway to Nowhere: Behind the Hate for NYC’s New Hudson Stairway to Nowhere: Behind the Hate for NYC’s New Hudson

How is it as an actual aesthetic experience? Very weird, and quite unpleasant, I am happy to report. Looking up from its cramped ground floor, where a panel glows bright blue (a bit like thatstrange orbPresident Trump and company touched in Saudi Arabia), you see row after row of the copper-plated steel that lines the staircases, resembling a high-end corporate headquarters or shopping center. It appears to have been specifically designed to induce intense amounts of dread and alienation… for me, it most resembles one of those sets in sci-fi films where members of an alien tribunal gaze down on humans and condemn them to work in salt mines on some distant planet.” Update July 2018: The tower has recently been damaged by an explosion caused by vandals. The base structure wasn’t damaged, so city council is looking to improve the tower. There are plans to make it even higher, and it’s said they may construct a new tower somewhere in 2019.In this lesson, students are asked to talk about their predictions based on the title of the photograph. They will complete a gap-fill reading text and develop their listening skills for specific information. The sculpture, which is made of steel and is over 30 feet tall, is a staircase in the shape of a double helix. The bottom of the steps has a small opening, so you can actually climb the stairs yourself.
