About this deal

Other important pluses include a crisp image to help make text more readable and show more detail in photorealistic images, vibrant color for graphics, and even good color accuracy and color saturation for photorealistic images. The last isn't true of many business projectors. Who It's For There's a growing trend in projectors of moving from using lamps as light sources to using LEDs or lasers. For the moment, at least, there are advantages to each choice. Projectors have come a long way from the days when they were all essentially interchangeable for anything from business presentations to setting up a home theater, and the most useful way to categorize them was by their weight class. Today, you can break them down by any number of meaningful categories, including their imaging technology (LCD, DLP, LCOS, and even laser raster), light source (lamp, LED, laser, or hybrid), and most important, their intended use.

The LSP9T excels with native 4K sources. As usual with DLP projectors, it doesn’t carry a truly native 4K resolution in the way that Sony’s SXRD projectors do. Instead it uses Texas Instruments’ ultra-fast double flashing technology to get the mirrors on its DLP chip to deliver more than a single pixel of picture for each image frame. The second category with good audio is sometimes billed as "laser TVs." These are built around a laser light source; a smart TV streaming feature, which can either be integrated or supplied as a dongle; and an ultra short throw (UST), which means they can throw a 100-inch or larger image with the projector just inches from a screen. Mount a screen on a wall, and the projector can sit on a table or entertainment center just below it. These laser-based UST models are wider than most other projectors. Virtually all offer audio that's at least comparable to what you would expect from a large-screen TV. Some take advantage of the width to add what amounts to a sound bar on the side facing away from the screen. We're huge fans of this tidy, compact short-throw projector. The Optoma CinemaX P2 is a perfect choice for smaller room setups, providing a dazzling image without taking up too much space or dominating a room. Though with 3,000 lumens it isn't as bright as some of the others on this list, it's a solid choice for watching movies in pretty much any conditions, though it's at its best in the dark.

All of this amounts to a device which – so long as you can run power to it, there are no batteries here –can project a very satisfying full HD image – in HDR10 – onto any surface you find. The auto-focus and keynote adjustments do just fine, in our test anyway, and can even be set to be re-triggered by the device being nudged or moved if you're one of those people who likes to try a few projection spots before settling down. Cost: projectors are, on the whole, cheaper than comparable HD TVs. A 108-inch TV, for example, would cost tens of thousands (if you can find one to buy), but getting the same screen size and equivalent HD picture quality could cost well under a thousand pounds with a projector. Projectors enable you to watch TV and films on an over 100-inch screen at home, and you don't need to win the lottery to buy one.

Most, but not all, oversize palmtops include built-in batteries so you don't always have to connect to a power outlet. When using battery power, however, they typically drop brightness significantly to get a longer battery life. Depending on the projector, you may or may not be able to set it for the highest brightness, even when using battery power. But if you can, don't expect the battery to last long. Considering the two Premiere models are the first home entertainment projectors Samsung has released for over a decade, it’s impressive to see how widely Samsung is distributing them across the world. It’s a clear sign of Samsung’s manufacturing and distribution might – and, perhaps, its confidence in its new creation.Of course! Projectors are like any kind of display technology, in that any of its inputs or connectivity options can be used to play photos or videos from compatible devices. Many projectors will contain USB ports to plug in a flash drive, with basic smart platforms to help navigate folders containing photos and other files. Bluetooth connectivity in some models will allow you to display photos from smartphones, tablets, and other source devices through your projection too. The BenQ GP500 earned the highest scores of any 4K room-to-room portable we've seen to date for both picture quality and audio. For both SDR and HDR input, it delivered good color accuracy, good contrast, and good shadow detail in dark scenes, complete with a sense of three dimensionality. The onboard audio creates a 360-degree sound field—using a DSP and four 5-watt chamber speakers (or drivers, if you prefer), with one in each of the projector's four corners—to offer both high enough volume to fill a large family room, and high enough quality to do without an external sound system. It also offers auto focus, screen fit (to match the image size to a screen), obstacle avoidance (so it won't project on light switches, for example), and other auto features to speed setup after moving it to another room. The key advantage of ultra short throw (UST) projectors? Giving you a big image from close to the screen, so you don't have to run cables through walls and ceilings. The key advantage of the Epson LS800? It has an even shorter throw than most. It can actually fill a 120-inch wall-mounted screen without having to pull the furniture it's resting on away from the wall. Along with high brightness, the V700W offers more-than-acceptable image quality, including better shadow detail than most projectors in this price range. Even the onboard audio, built around dual 5-watt speakers and Dolby Digital Plus, is impressive for an inexpensive projector. And the input lag—measured at 26 milliseconds for 1080p, 60Hz input—is easily fast enough for casual gaming. Who It's For Home entertainment projectors like the BenQ TK860i are meant primarily for use in ambient light, which means they're designed for high brightness even if it means some loss of image quality. True to form, the TK860i puts brightness first, but its image quality holds up nicely. In addition to 4K resolution (thanks to a DLP chip equipped with TI's fast-switch pixel shifting), it offers BenQ's new HDR-PRO technology, which works for SDR, HDR10, and HLG HDR input to deliver better shadow detail, contrast, and sense of three dimensionality thanmost of the competition. The projector also offers smart TV streaming features thanks to a bundled Android TV 11 dongle, and it supports full HD 3D. Gamers will also appreciate input lags that we measured at a little longer than the current state-of-the-art, but short enough for all but the most serious gaming. Who It's For Prices have tumbled over the years, so if you're fitting out a man cave, playroom, garage, in-home movie theatre, or (in the right weather at least) garden cinema you'll find something for almost any budget.Screen options: the cheapest option for a projector screen is to use a wall, although the quality of the experience depends on its smoothness, and obviously colour. You can improve this with special reflective paint, but it’s also worth considering a dedicated projector screen. Manual projector screens come in various types, including tripod or wall mounted. There are also motorised projector screens, including premium screens that can be stored away when not in use. You do have to put some careful consideration into whether this is the right option compared to a large TV though, projectors do have their limitations. You'll need a dark room or the image on screen can appear washed out and attaching the projector to your ceiling can require extensive DIY. Picture quality is better than the P8 in some ways, worse in others. The Vimgo P10 has a great contrast ratio and decent brightness, but the color is remarkably terrible. The center of the image is noticeably sharper and brighter than the rest of the image. It's not great. Unlike many of the other projectors on this list the AAXA P8 can't run on a battery -- you need to plug in its power adapter -- but it's so small, bright and cheap it makes the list anyway. There are certainly less expensive projectors out there, but nothing we've seen at this price or lower, with the exception of the Vimgo P10, is worth recommending.
