About this deal

It focuses on a personal act of revolution, rather than trying to overthrow the system. Brigg can't change how the city runs, but he can try to grow a flower. The theme of finding a point of happiness when the world seems bleak will resonate with children going through tough times. Brigg is a child living in a grey city. He works at the library, where he finds a book he isn't supposed to read. It's filled with pictures of flowers, which he hasn't seen before. If only he could find a flower in the city.

John Light creates a dystopian society through his use of color. The bad parts of the world are done in a solitary and sad gray. The pictures are very depressing, not child friendly in my opinion. To show the good in the society, he added color to people and things. These are very bold indicators of the good and bad. The shadow around the people's eyes show the depressing tone of the story. The illustrations dramatically change as Brigg's flower grew. In this book, Pryke explores the process of how to move from the source of inspiration to the glorious finished flower arrangement. She ties together key aspects of making a good arrangement: mixing color, form, shape, texture, and scale; being inspired by how plants and flowers combine in nature; using foliage and fruit for visual surprise; and much more. Use your cutting machine or X-ACTO knife, along with my template, to cut out all of the pop-up flower book pieces.

The eerie illustrations show the state of the future environment which exposes the problems with society and the over-urbanisation of our planet. However, the book does depict a hopeful ending through the final image. This image could usefully be studied by pupils who could make inferences on how the story continues based upon the final illustration in the book. In my opinion this book was a little creepy. I don't really think it is an appropriate picture book for younger ages. I did not care for the illustrations because they were so dark. Brigg looked like a character from a haunted house. It looked like he had dark eyeliner on and everything about him seemed eerie. The only color in this book was basically the flower. The illustrations did not pop and I couldn't really connect with them. The art reinforces the story, by showing the city as a dull grey place. Brigg is shown walking the other way to everyone else, or sitting apart from other children, highlighting how out-of-place he feels. His room is very plain, with few personal items. Once the flower appears, it's a point of colour and life in an otherwise dull environment. Have you ever wondered how florists create such awe-inspiring floral arrangements that look like they’ve come straight out of a magazine? Well, now you can too! This inspirational and practical book will show you how to arrange flowers beautifully and create modern flower designs, whether it’s weddings, for the home and so much more!

Attach the pop-up section to the interior of the book. Add your flowers, stems, and branches inside—all around the pop-up section.Grab the book cover and fold along the score lines. Attach the white, rectangular piece to the front. Next, glue on the four little triangular pieces—slightly off of each corner. Add any other embellishments or decorations you’d like your book to have. She also offers tips on how to prep flowers before arranging them (I had no idea this was even a thing…), and then she gives even more detailed instructions for creating front-facing arrangements, centerpieces, and hand-held bouquets.

As a book-lover, this project is very close to my heart! I am really pleased with the overall look of both the book and the flowers within, and I hope you are too. The illustrations I didn’t connect well and also don’t think children will either. The characters don’t look happy from the beginning. The colors set a mood of sadness and depression. The main character lives alone and his room doesn’t look homey at all. He lives alone and look very young for his age to be living alone. My yard might not look so great this year due to the drought; but, here in my craft room, things are in full bloom! Whether you are an avid reader, a flower fanatic, or both, you are sure to love my pop-up flower book. I toyed with the idea of it being a static papercraft, but I just knew that this was a project that deserved movement. So, I devised a way (after much trial and error) to actually make the flowers burst out of the book! The flower in this story I think represents freedom. The illustrations are very bland without color and all of a sudden when the flower comes into play there is color and the flower is the only thing that remains color. The main character also becomes happier when seeing the flower. So I also think the flower represent happiness. I think that children can relate and catch these themes because of the color scheme.

How to Make It

The Flower Book explores 60 flowers, bloom-by-bloom in stunning portraiture. Lush macrophotography allows readers to see the details of each featured flower up close, from the amaryllis in spring, snapdragon in summer, and dahlia in fall to tropical wonders such as orchids and more. There are a total of 12 daisies (6 white, 2 pink, 2 yellow, and 2 blue). To make a daisy, simply layer together to pieces of the same size, and attach the center piece. I didn't even think about how much money I had left. I didn't even bother to read the synopsis (like I usually do). I just bought it. This might be one of those magical moments where you got chosen by the book itself.
