Because, let's be honest, they weren't either very interesting or very good. And I was a Mild drinker. No way I would have ever drunk Light Ale.

Never sold on draught, Light Ale is often considered as bottled ordinary Bitter. Yet it might be more accurate to call it bottled Light Mild. What with the modest hopping and use of mild ale malt. Whitbread brewed something called Light Ale in the 1920's and 1930's which was in a completely different style. For one thing it was dark in colour. It was basically a watered-down version of Dark Mild, with a gravity of just 1028 and less than 3% ABV. Its origins probably lie in the low-gravity Milds produced towards the end of WW I. They never brewed huge quantities of it and, when their standard Mild's gravity dropped to around the 1030 mark at the beginning of WW II, it was discontinued.Interestingly, Young’s also state that it is often mixed with Young’s bitter. And what does that give you, light and bitter of course. Pour half a pint of a beer like pale ale into a pint glass and then top up with a stout. If you pour the stout carefully the bottom half will be the lighter ale and the top the dark stout. Guinness is used a lot for this drink. It can also be mixed as lager and stout. Brown And Mild

One last little point. For those who think every style of beer is currently brewed in the USA, who makes a Light Ale? Today, only a handful of Light Ales are still brewed. Courage Light Ale probably being the most widely available.

BYO

In January 2007, the rights for the production, marketing and sales of the Courage brands were sold to Wells & Young's Brewing Company of Bedford which reverted to Charles Wells, once Wells bought out Young's shares in the venture. This is managed by a venture called Courage Brands Ltd. [3] Heineken retained a 17 per cent stake in the venture until 2011, when Wells & Young's acquired complete control. The Berkshire Brewery closed in April 2010. [4] Courage Best has undergone a significant decline in sales from almost 421,000 hectolitres (9.3 million gallons) in 2003 to under 142,000 hectolitres (3.1 million gallons) in 2012. [5] The decline of Courage Directors has levelled off at around 60,000 hectolitres (1.3 million gallons), which is down from 140,000 hectolitres (3.1 million gallons) in 2003. [5] Wells & Young's reintroduced the historic brew, Courage Imperial Russian Stout, which was first brewed in the 18th century by Thrale's brewery; [6] but this has mainly proved to be produced for distribution in the US, with limited amounts available in the UK. Much to my surprise, the Southern Light Ales work out as the best value, on average. And includes the two of the individual best value beers: Cook Golden Ale and Adnams Pale Ale. While the best value of all was Vaux Light Brown Ale. Today you are in for a treat...nah, not really. However you are in for a beer that a lot of you older gents have tried. Courage's light ale. This one beer has a lot of stuff in it that I haven't seen before in a beer which we'll get to. My wondering is how close this recipe, 1965, is true to the one that's brewed today.
