About this deal

The 17” chopping axes have a unique head shape compared to the rest. It has a thinner wedge shape that lends itself to more chopping “bushcraft” type of work and less to splitting (but there is a separate splitting version). Model

In this Fiskars X-Series Axes Comparison Guide, we explain what each different model is designed for and what it is best used for. You will learn the difference between a hatchet and a camping axe as well as come out knowing which axe you need. Fiskars X-Series Axes Comparison I decided to do a test for the sake of this review. The test was to run the axe over and see if I could break the handle. Accidentally running over your hatchet isn’t too far-fetched. It’s bound to happen to someone. Of course, if it does get broken you won’t be able to fix it. That means survivalists may want to choose a more traditional hatchet with a wood handle. The X11 should be a serious contender for anyone with a homestead or cottage that keeps and uses a woodpile. Another consideration of an axe’s size is safety. And this may seem counterintuitive, but in general, the largest axes are the safest, especially for inexperienced users. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the best all-around. Nor does it mean they’re the cheapest. We’re looking for incredible value with an unbeatable price. What Makes A Good Hatchet The two types of Fiskars axe types are chopping and splitting, and they look almost identical – but they are different.

The FiberComp handle is strong and lightweight despite being completely hollow. Some people might worry about being too heavy-handed with a handle like this but let me tell you, it is stronger than steel and as good if not better than any wooden handled ax I own. The length is perfect to get rapid swings without much wind-up. The lip at the base of the handle really helps to keep a good grip on the hatchet enabling you to feel more comfortable when hard at work. There is also a lanyard loop for extra safety. Size and Weight And, I’ll say it again, if you’re not concerned about the money at all, the Gransfors Bruk wildlife hatchet is perfect for you. It’s something you can use your whole life and pass it on to your kids. The X7 is probably the better for basic car camping – where your wood comes pre-cut and you might just need to pop a few pieces apart for kindling. The X10 is more of a forest axe and chopper that can also be a kindling maker. The X7 is small, light, and a great all-around hatchet. It can be handled easily by new and experienced users alike and is surprisingly capable in this role. It can split 4.5-5 inch pieces pretty easily. So you don’t need to worry about which log you start making kindling from. The X7 head splits well

Fiskars In The Field

A trip to their official YouTube channel showed me their axes are drop-forged by hand. I’m not entirely sure if this is true for all their tools but I’ll do some more digging later to find out for sure. I don’t consider this hatchet the best for the money. I believe it’s the best overall, in terms of quality, and I believe it’s well worth the price. If money isn’t an issue for you, I highly recommend this hatchet. Otherwise, you might consider getting something almost as good for half the price. The features of an X7 look impressive, but is it any good? In this article, we’ll review the X25 to help you understand its features, strengths, and weaknesses. What is a Fiskars X7? After splashing water on the handle, its grip didn’t become slippery. A handy feature if you’re likely to use the X7 in wet conditions. Strengths of a Fiskars X7 You can find countless posts online about this particular hatchet. Many of which have something to do with the steel Fiskars uses and what the edge retention is like. People have claimed to spend well over 30 minutes working the edge only to get it “reasonably sharp”. O

Fiskars has been making tools since 1649 and has built a solid reputation for long-lasting products. Finland’s oldest private company forges its tools locally under strict quality guidelines. We write about the Fiskars corporation here. It will easily blow through typical kindling size wood and has more potential to be dangerous to less experienced users. The blade could find your other hand or your shins very easily if used incorrectly. If you compare this one to the Husqvarna hatchet, you’ll find them remarkably similar in appearance; from the head to the handle. The only notable difference is the color of the steel and the logo stamp on the cheek of the head. The new model is said to have been perfected for accurate balance and high swing speed thanks to the lightweight handle and 71 cm length. If I could take one axe on this list for a longer camping trip, it would probably be this one, and if I don’t have a long distance to hike, then I would also take this X-Series model. While you would be forgiven for calling a hatchet an axe, there are some loose differences between axes and hatchets which are still up for debate. Senior editor at Popular Mechanics, Roy Berendsohn defines a hatchet as simply, “a small one-hand axe used for chopping”, which I would have to agree with. Another unique feature of the Fiskars X7 hatchet is its hollow handle. At only 14” in length, this makes for a light tool that anyone can swing. It was possible to split small spruce and pine logs but that’s not what this axe is designed for. It’ll do the job when you’re away from home, but you’re better off with the Fiskars X27 or X25 axe for tougher splitting jobs.

Due to limited space, a hiker or survivalist will usually opt for something with a shorter handle but at 14 inches, it’s not a bad option. If you appreciate modern-looking axes with innovative technology, then the X25 should impress. Constructed using a PermaHead design, its head is virtually impossible to come loose from the handle. Perfected balance and power-to-weight ratio increases swing speed to multiply power, much like an aluminum baseball bat

The X7 blade can be sharpened like a regular axe using sandpaper, files, or an electric tool. Fiskars offer a special sharpener that helps maintain the tool’s correct blade profile. What is the best alternative to the Fiskars X7? While the swell of its pommel provides a natural resting place for the hand, I found the texturing to be a bit abrasive against the skin of my pinky finger. As for Prandi and Husqvarna, the quality is similar but this hatchet costs nearly twice as much. It’s a great value for the money but maybe not as much as Prandi or Husqvarna.
