CHELSEA MANNING: The Scandalous True Story of an All-Am… CHELSEA MANNING: The Scandalous True Story of an All-Am…

Manning’s father jumped instantly into the “government’s-going-to-take-your-guns mentality”, she says, a position she despises. On April 22, 2019, a federal appeals court upheld the trial court's decision holding Manning in contempt and denied a request by Manning that she be released on bail. I have things that I care about, I have positions that I hold, and I feel like especially in the online era, you find an identity and you fit your beliefs to your identity, which is not how I work at all.

Well, Pfc Manning was under the impression that his leaked information was going to really change how the world views the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and future wars, actually. The trial on the remaining charges began on June 3, 2013, and on July 30, she was convicted of 17 of the original charges and amended versions of four others, but was acquitted of aiding the enemy. She was in prison for seven years before President Obama commuted her sentence in 2017, a chunk of that time spent in Quantico military prison, in solitary confinement. She has, perhaps, the worst form of celebrity, one that guarantees intrusion and wild gossip – earlier this year, she was rumoured to be dating Canadian musician (and Elon Musk’s ex) Grimes, something she won’t dignify with comment – but one that doesn’t deliver any perks or income. Manning said she gave WikiLeaks a video, in late March 2010, of the Granai airstrike in Afghanistan.Manning’s parents met in a pub in Wales in the mid-1970s, where her father was stationed with the US Navy. A year later, similar concerns propelled her to leak a huge cache of diplomatic cables from the US Department of State.

One time, they abandoned her during a camping trip—of which incident, her aunt told The Washington Post that Manning had awoken to an empty campsite after the other campers had left without her. I also request that, starting today, you refer to me by my new name and use the feminine pronoun (except in official mail to the confinement facility). She sued to be allowed to grow her hair longer and use cosmetics, and to receive hormone treatments "to express her female gender" I know that community is possible, because I’ve seen it, and I’ve seen it in the worst places that you can possibly imagine.

The heavily redacted final report was not published until June 2017, after a Freedom of Information request by investigative reporter Jason Leopold. There is, she believes, too much emphasis placed on identity at the expense of other considerations. They talked about restricted material in general, then Manning made her first explicit reference to the leaks: "This is what I do for friends. Like: I went through this transition period and it was very difficult and I needed access to care, and once I got care I’ve been able to function as an adult and not really think about this stuff. The cables were passed by Assange to his three media partners, plus El País and others, and published in stages from November 28, 2010, with the names of sources removed.

She was entirely isolated in Quantico for nine months, an experience the UN later ruled was “ cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in violation of article 16 of the convention against torture”. Before the pandemic, she was doing speaking events mainly at the invitation of students, but lockdown put paid to that. She was required to remain visible at all times, including at night, which entailed no access to sheets, no pillow except one built into her mattress, and a blanket designed not to be shredded. In November 2016, Manning made a formal petition to President Obama to reduce her 35-year sentence to the six years of time she had already served.

On May 7, according to Army witnesses, Manning was found curled in a fetal position in a storage cupboard; she had a knife at her feet and had cut the words "I want" into a vinyl chair. It’s like, no; it’s because I was a data scientist who had way too much information and was actually trying to do my job, and realised that continuing on like this is not sustainable. Manning's sister Casey told the court-martial that both their parents were alcoholics, and that their mother drank continually while pregnant with Chelsea. Her lawyer, David Coombs, a former military attorney, said Manning was not allowed to sleep between 5 am (7 am on weekends) and 8 pm, and was made to stand or sit up if she tried to. I ask if she has read it and she looks bemused, eyes skimming the room, before going off on a diatribe about the US military’s “psychology of lethality”.
