About this deal

Enraging misogynist heaving bullshit. Won the World Fantasy Award in the 1980s. Why am I not surprised. The Bone Forest was nominated for the World Fantasy Award in the category of Best Collection in 1992. Or here's a big concern: regular people becoming myth and thereby gaining... and losing quite a bit in the process. The obsession cuts away at all the other things that make a person real until they are both bigger than life and much, much less.

The wood has a slower rate of time than the outside world. For example, a day may pass in normal time, yet a traveller within the wood may have been there for weeks or longer. In addition, "Time Slows", areas subjected to extraordinarily slow passage of time, are revealed in The Hollowing.

Mythago Wood is a remarkable, evocative book, and one that shows us that the tropes of fantasy are not restricted purely to alien worlds troubled by dark lords and dragons.’ Una lectura de fantasía para mi obligatoria y que me arrepiento de no haber leído nunca antes. Una obra distinta con toques de mitología y realismo mágico, con ambientes inquietantes y gran profundidad onírica. In the wood, Christian is an Everyman figure. He wonders at everything, narrating his journey step-by-step with a refreshingly straightforward style. Not for him are long hypothetical tangents about the nature of the mythagos. He accepts the wood and its inhabitants as real, perhaps as a product of his obsessive love for Guiwenneth, and as such willingly submerges himself in its reality. Unconsciously at first, he throws himself into the role of mythic hero, acquiring companions, accepting quests, and having the sort of scrapes normally associated with the sort of characters first-year English majors are forced to study. I had the sense of recognition…here was something which I had known all my life, only I didn’t know it…

Drout, Michael (2006). Of Sorcerers and Men: Tolkien and the Roots of Modern Fantasy Literature (1sted.). China: Barnes & Noble. ISBN 978-0-7607-8523-2. Ritual Sacrifice – A young woman is sacrificed and sunk to the bottom of a lake, becoming part of the earth. The interior of Ryhope wood is a pre-Christian British setting in which pagan and shamanistic rituals are common, and one scholar notes that death and mortal remains are prominent and disturbing part of these works. [22] Along the same lines, it is noted that Mythago Wood might convey a more disturbing side of shamanism than other fantasy. The horrific Christian from the first book is a noble quester here, reasonably selfless and in pursuit of others’ goals as well as his own. His allies are (like all heroic companions in the Ryhope books) a doomed band, but they choose to live as vibrantly as they are able. Perhaps most importantly. Kylhuk’s quest — and by extension, Christian’s — is a quest to achieve, to find, to do, unlike the central pursuit of Mythago Wood, which is all about undoing another’s work. The 1991 and 1992 editions of the book contain seven short stories in addition to the novella The Bone Forest., after which the volume takes its name. The additional stories in The Bone Forest bear little relation with either time or events in the Mythago Wood cycle, yet the short stories are largely influenced by the fantasy realm created as part of the Mythago Wood cycle.
