Probably in the 70s when the CBGB scene was beginning and after Chris had submitted photos to Soho News, a little downtown paper.

Face It: Debbie Harry’s cool and forthright memoir

I'm still doing a good job of sticking to my resolution not to read any more rock memoirs written by dudes, but for whatever reason, I still really like reading accounts from the 1970's era of music - so I'm always looking for books written by the women who were around for that era. But some sections read as if Harry wrote them down (including the amusing 'thumb'-themed afterword). I sensed a vulnerability and a particular kind of femaleness that I felt we shared … That was long before I discovered that Marilyn had been a foster child. She adored movies, fashion, TV, science fiction, radio, listening to big band music and enthralled by the drum-and-bugle corps that rehearsed within earshot of her house, playing the same song (“Valencia”) for hours. But as I say, I wasn’t beaten or assaulted and I think that, coupled with being sexually violated, is truly awful.

Harry also reunited with Blondie keyboardist Jimmy Destri for a cover of Otis Blackwell's "Don't Be Cruel" for the 1995 album Brace Yourself! Whatever Giger meant by it, Harry’s embrace of his design underscores her innate understanding that some people respond to great beauty with the urge to destroy it. Women are serious wage-earners, and we create great things, and it seems clear to me that we can be supportive of one another regardless of what sex [we are]. It was around this time that Stein also fell seriously ill with the rare autoimmune disease pemphigus. She’s been knocking around the city for almost five years, always on the sidelines, when she decides to move back to New Jersey. The Blondie frontwoman has been open about her anti-ageing treatments over the years, and even said having cosmetic surgery is similar to having a flu jab. During this time, both Harry and Stein befriended graffiti artist Fab Five Freddy, who introduced them to the emerging hip-hop scene in the Bronx. She was furious when Blondie’s record label put out a poster with a picture of her wearing a see-through blouse. Face It by Debbie Harry review — the face that launched a

I also think that because it’s my occupation – to be a performer and to attract attention and to appeal to sexuality – it’s sort of a given in showbiz. But my emotional self values this book and Debbie Harry's revelations more than 4 stars, maybe even more than 5 stars. Maybe you had to be there--and I really wasn't, as I was marooned in Mayberry in the '70s and early '80s. A streaming version of the lead single, " Two Times Blue", was added to Harry's Myspace page in May 2007. Some may dismiss her obvious femininity but it is actually a homage to her admiration for Marilyn Monroe and the smarts behind her "acting" dumb.

She went to shows by the Velvet Underground, Janis Joplin, Sun Ra, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman; engaged in happenings where she chanted and played “anti-music music” with the First National Uniphrenic Church and Bank; got involved with a performance art hustler who, in the midst of extended foreplay, stopped the proceedings to let a stranger film her. It wasn’t until she was 31 – relatively old by pop-star standards – that Debbie Harry became famous. Yes, Harry glides over some darker days (drugs, assaults and near-death experiences), but counters them with the simple joy of collaborating with the likes H. she's more than old enough to be my mother but I'm still old enough to have owned at least one album as a kid and one 45 (young people will have to Google that lol) and she was never considered pretty by any means during that time period. In 2006, Harry started work in New York City on her fifth solo album, Necessary Evil (released in 2007).
