This book is really all over the place and nearly gave me a headache trying to keep up with all of the twists and turns, many of which really seemed very far-fetched.Erika's mother wishes the money to be used toward a new, future apartment with her, and resents Erika's spending of her money on possessions distinctly for herself; her mother cannot wear Erika's clothing. Personally, for me there's one too many twists and reveals and the story folding back on itself for me to really enjoy it. Now, she is married to attorney, Rick, a man older than her and is the mother to Bryson, a high school sophomore. It’s important to start with this reflection when considering Gilroy’s 1976 memoir, Black Teacher, now republished with an introduction by Bernardine Evaristo.
