About this deal

ALEX: There was once a detective called Magnifying Glass. And Magnifying Glass, um, was, he really wanted to find a magical butterfly. LAURA: I loved the Roald Dahl books as well when I was younger. So exciting, "Matilda" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and stuff. LAURA: While Marta carries on drawing, Alex, what do you think the book title would be of that story? Together with Sam Copeland and Jenny Pearson, the above authors/illustrators could be used as an example to discuss teamwork and identify what factors are important when working in a team. OK, Marta, I've got another one for you here. How do you think illustrations add to the experience for the reader?

ALEX: So the first thing I think about is what do I want the setting to do in- as part of the story? Um, how do I want this place to feel? Um, how do I want the audience to feel about it? And then when you can go from there, when you know what you want, um, you-, how you want the place to feel, then you- you go through your senses. Think about your smell, um, the things you can hear, the things you can see. And then just really go through there, and, um, and using that you can really craft a- a setting. LAURA: Ok, so this is for both of you. What was it like to work with Marcus Rashford? How did you work together to come up with the story?LAURA: Yeah, Fantastic Mr Fox is a good character. I actually dressed up as Fantastic Mr Fox for our World Book Day here. With a book that includes emphasised words in a text, how do you decide which are the important words to stand out? LAURA: That is a good review, thank you so much. Ok, let's get to know you a bit more. I've got some questions for you here. ALEX: Mm-hmm, yeah. The thing that I always think about is, um, for getting my main character, um, to think about what are the things that they want and to um-, and to kind of show them trying to get that. Um, when you have a main character and you have a thing that they want, you immediately have, I think, a little bit of tension, which I think can really add to the mystery, um, and to the suspense of a chapter.

LAURA: Hmm. We've got some questions about writing and illustrating books, but all we need is a writer and an illustrator. Ah! Marta! Alex! Perfect! MARTA: And then we're gonna go – just not to get lost in it a bit too much, we go a little bit on one side...a little bit on the other. ANTHONY HOROWITZ: Well, WriteForLife, I, I mean, it's so difficult. I mean, I, I sort of love all my books, really. But I guess I have to go for "Where Seagulls Dare", because it's the most recent book. It's the one that's just out now. And I think that's how it is when you're a writer. The book you're writing or the book you've just written is the one that you feel closest to. In October 2020, he was appointed MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours. Marcus has committed himself to combating child poverty in the UK and his book You Are a Champion, written with Carl Anka, is an inspiring guide for children about reaching their full potential. Marcus's first fiction title, The Breakfast Club Adventures, written with Alex Falase-Koya, published in May 2022.LAURA: Yes, absolutely. Now you know, I've got a question for you here. What is your favourite book character ever? MARTA: Little circles for the- for the pupils. We can add a little bit more definition on the top of the eye for, well, a bit of, er, lashes.

Don't miss the Breakfast Club Investigators next adventure in The Breakfast Club Adventures: The Ghoul in the School! MARTA: I know, it's actually been recently translated into English. Uh, it's been translated in many languages before, but not English. ANd I think recently has, so. The last one for you here. There are cups, tea pots, and tea everywhere. A hat has been left at the scene of the crime. It looks like there has been some sort of party. Perhaps an un-birthday party.

More in Books

The third title in the Marcus Rashford Book Club is. The Breakfast Club Adventures: The Beast Beyond the Fence , written by Marcus Rashford with Alex Falase-Koya, and illustrated by Marta Kissi. It is Marcus Rashford’s first fiction book for children! LAURA: –Yeah, that's a good-, that's a good tip. OK, Marta, this one's for you. As an illustrator, how do you decide what you're going to draw in a book? Share other illustrated stories with the children and see if any of the illustrations could inspire them to draw in a similar fashion. Ask them to identify what techniques and materials they think have been used.
