About this deal

Victor Alderheim is a ruthless man who marries for money, leaves his wife penniless after divorce and leaves his son to die in Kenyan forest. When the two of them decide to take thier revenge, they decide to do it with professsional help. Enter Hugo who runs Sweet Sweet Revenge - an enterprise trying to capitalise on the promising market of revenge. Things take a turn after the planned revenge when they inadvertantly make their target a potential billionaire. With the Maasai witch doctor Ole joining the trio things go crazy. I thought this book was uproariously funny and enjoyed its laugh-out-loud moments. However, it was longer than it needed to be. An added bonus was learning about some leading artists that were unknown to me. The comedy connects some diverse characters in a surprising way. The story is set mainly in Sweden.

Or you can tell from the first lines of the latest comedic epic from the Swedish author to be translated into English, “Sweet Sweet Revenge LTD,” which opens thusly: “Once upon a time, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, there was a moderately successful artist. His first name was Adolf, and he would eventually become famous for other reasons.” It is certainly a comedy (loosely speaking) of errors from start to finish. Featuring the most (literally as there is FAR too many of them) eccentric and outrageous cast of characters -who I’m sorry, some opinions were utterly abhorrent, making it extremely hard to invest in them (Tw/ mild racism and homophobia) which even if this was their ‘personality’ or the writers intention, was nevertheless extremely uncomfortable to read. When my father said, “The world is crap, it makes you want to cry.” I said to myself, “It doesn’t help crying. It doesn’t help laughing either, but it’s more fun.”

The brand-new adventure from the beloved author of The Hundred Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared.

As he's done in his previous novels, Jonas Jonasson acts as a travel guide through time, drops in a few lessons on colonialism and art history, and pokes fun at capitalism and the art world, supplying plenty of laughs along the way. As Agneta and Kevin seek revenge against a gallery owner who has wronged them, this funny and philosophical novel takes off on a madcap journey that spans five continents and whirls around a colourful cast of characters, including a goat called Molly and the Pope. It took me a while to get into and get a feel for the characters, but I just didn't see it as wholly original and I had hopes that this author would be much more creative than he was with this book.As Jenny and Kevin seek revenge against the gallery owner who has wronged them, this madcap, funny and philosophical novel takes off on a madcap journey that spans five continents and whirls around a colorful cast of characters, including a goat called Molly and the Pope. After reading and loving 'The One Hundred Year Old Man who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared', I was thrilled to get approved for Jonasson's latest offering. She bloomed late in the story, but it turned out so well that my German publisher put out a book about her to go along with “Sweet Sweet Revenge.” This is quite possibly the most long winded, convoluted, mumbo jumbo I’ve read this year so far! And that’s coming from me, the ever rambling female Adam Buxton -she wishes.

Jonas Jonasson’s books are just different. You can tell from just the title of his first novel, “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared,” a book that has sold millions of copies worldwide. A pleasant and poignant book, through its comical story line it touches and satirises many important themes. The plot is of course based on impossibilities, coincidences and farsical misunderstandings and doesn't stand any serious scrutinity. I liked the story and the humor but I felt that often the pace is uneven. As a student of literature, I’d learnt many many years ago about the “willing suspension of disbelief” that enables appreciation and enjoyment of art, that is so often, a subjective expression. I love Jonas Jonasson's books, and The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared remains one of my all-time favourite books. When I heard we were getting a new Jonasson book, I was beyond excited and more than ready for another wild ride filled with his trademark witty humour, sharp social commentary and surreal situations. Unfortunately, Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd didn't quite deliver for me.To summarise, this book is farcical in EVERY sense of the word. And unless you know and have read Jónasson’s work before, perhaps give it a miss. Jonas Jonasson certainly seem to take pleasure in writing farces, comedy of errors that happen to somehow work out. Kevin and Jenny get their revenge on the cynical, opportunist Victor – who has no redeeming character at all. I enjoyed the fact that the young couple was assisted by the owner of Sweet Sweet Revenge, Ltd. A man who, like Victor, has little redeeming qualities except that his not a fascist. Overall, this was an entertaining read despite its issues, and my disappointment in it might have stemmed more from my high expectations than anything else. A comedy of errors that missed the mark for me, but still good enough to pass a few hours.
