About this deal

Apply this on a cool calm day November to February when there're no leaves on the trees. This will clear the tree up ready for the spring. Some pests will overwinter in leaf litter or in the soil around your fruit trees so they can be near to their food source when spring comes around. Good garden hygiene is the answer. Rake up all fallen leaves and compost them away from your trees to foil pests such as apple blossom weevil, which can destroy flowers and ruin your fruit crop. Choose fine wire mesh if your trees are plagued by smaller rodents such as voles, and make sure there is a wide enough gap between the trunk and the mesh so that hungry muzzles can’t push through and reach the bark. Flex the mesh into a tube and secure it using cable ties or wire. Use a cane to keep the tree guard upright, and make sure the wire is pushed firmly into the soil with no gaps at ground level. You may be able to remove guards in summer if the rodent problem is limited to the winter months. 5. Encourage Pest Predators With a blend of surfactants and natural oils, it removes insect debris, dust and wax which insects use to secure their eggs. Suitable for use on evergreen plants, it removes contaminants from the leaf surface to increase light exposure and encourage photosynthesis.

Winter washing can be an effective way to rid yourself of overwintering pests and fungal spores on fruit trees. It is possible to find ‘organic’ solutions for this purpose. But in an organic garden, winter washing is not necessarily a good idea.It is important at the time of application that the tree is fully dormant and early February is the ideal time to do this. To ensure all parts of the bark are treated, spray to ‘run off’ using a medium to coarse spray , which is easily achieved with most garden sprayers by lowering the pressure to prevent any fine droplets drifting and not reaching the target.

One simple way to protect your trees during the winter is by giving them a ‘winter wash’. As you might expect, this involves removing the dirt, dust, and debris that may have built up on the tree’s bark and leaves. Not only does this help prevent pests and diseases, but it also allows for better air and light penetration, which can help the tree stay healthy. Keep trees well watered but do not overwater. Mulch well around fruit trees with organic matter to protect soil and retain moisture and nutrients. But keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent rotting. healthy bark, and the resulting wound painted with a fungicidal paint. Staking Fruit Trees and Bushes in Winter Winter washing of roses and fruit trees is a horticultural practice to remove any residue, such as dust, debris, and disease-carrying organisms, from the foliage and stems. This helps to prevent fungal diseases, promote healthy growth and prepare the plants for the next growing season. It is usually done in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. The technique involves using a spray of water or a dilute solution of soap and water to gently wash the plants. Make sure to provide overwintering habitats so that predators are on hand to step in when pests begin to become a nuisance next year – piles of stones or twigs, hedges and hollow standing plant stems all make great habitats, or you can make a bug hotel.

Spray the tree: Use the sprayer to apply the solution to the entire tree, including the trunk and branches. Make sure to cover all surfaces of the tree, including the top and bottom of the leaves. An established bush or half-standard tree that has been growing for 3-4 years and developed a good head of branches will need about 3 litres, so 1 bottle of concentrate should do 3 young trees. The time is ripe for garden enthusiasts to protect trees and bushes from insects and aphids looking for prime spots to lay their eggs this winter. To help prepare for the harsh months ahead, Vitax has developed three products to keep insects at bay. Winter Tree Wash, Fruit Tree Grease and Tree Bands have each been created to ensure trees remain in tip-top condition during the colder months. The GardenAdvice team are often asked about apple trees by a lot of clients, the key really is to set them up in the later autumn and winter months which will generate some great fruit later in the autumn. February with hopefully most of the severe winter weather behind us, sees the onset of many jobs in the fruit garden. For me it is the month of pruning as it is easier to identify dead and diseased wood as the sap is starting to rise and feeding where I like to replenish the Potassium reserves for the coming season by giving the trees a dressing of Granulated Sulphate of Potash at around 20 grams per square metre. Surface applied, this fertiliser is just simply scattered where it will be washed in by the spring rains.
