About this deal

I’ve met quite a few “yachties” during my travels. People who work as yacht & sailboat crewmembers for a living. What is day work? Work one day, get paid in cash. Simple. It’s a great way to earn a bit of extra cash and network with other yachties! Day work can often turn into a full-time crew position. The term ‘Falmouth Working Boat’ is fairly recent and mainly applies now to the boats that race during the summer months. These versatile craft, originally given the name ‘Truro River Oyster Dredging Boats’, took their name from the occupation they were used for and the area in which it took place. During the nineteenth century the Fal fisheries were boosted by problems of supply in other fisheries but by the 1860s the Fal saw a reduction in production of oysters because of disease, pollution and overfishing. The industry was saved by the regulation for hand dredging by ‘sail or oar’ and the requirement of a licence for each dredge, a system which still exists today. There will be more to your boat, in rigging, maintenance, and sailing. Some find it fun, while others find it intimidating. You must see if it suits your passion.

Over the years boatbuilders have also repaired, refurbished and built working boats. In the mid twentieth century designers and boat builders such as Percy Dalton and Terry Heard at Mylor Bridge produced working boats which, whilst using modern materials, remained true to the traditional form. The Racing Fleet Some boats charter (are available for rent) and others do not. If you want to work hard and earn more money, I recommend working on a boat that charters. The fishery is within the Truro Port Fishery, an area of 2721 acres, which includes all parts of the Truro and Falmouth Harbours and the bed of the Truro, Fal and Tresillian Rivers.Terry, who joined the team in 2006, takes up the story: “Once the boats were restored, they needed people to take them out on the water and attract visitors to the canals; the group was set up to facilitate that.” The sea will forever be a part of my soul, and sailing through those starry nights with a 360-degree horizon is a meditative place I return to. I have been forever changed by my time at sea.

Over the years the boats have been built in various boatyards in Cornwall but particularly those around the Fal. It was a hard life on board a working narrowboat, and even the children had to pitch in. As Joan tells us: “There was only ever one salary paid to the father, but the whole family was expected to work, including the children once they were above the age of about six.” and watersports. They have an average power of 445 and their sizes can go from 4 metre to 43 metre. These boats are constructed by a wide variety of boat makers with hull types which include catamaran, displacement, semi-displacementWhile looking for yacht jobs on a foreign-flagged vessel in America is not technically illegal, it’s frowned upon and not something you want to tell immigration officers. When this provision was first passed as a byelaw by the Truro Corporation in 1868, it was an early example of a conservation measure providing protection for the oyster beds of the Fal estuary. It also provided the impetus for the distinctive design and building of the river dredging oyster boats of the Truro River now known as Falmouth Working Boats. Oysters have been fished in these waters, which are a natural and wild fishery, for centuries. It is thought that the Phoenicians and Romans collected oysters from Cornwall and there are well documented references to the Fal oyster fishery in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Most yachts have a chef, and they are well paid, but you will need some prior cooking knowledge & skills. The larger the yacht, the more formal the expectations and entry requirements will be (like experience cooking at high-end restaurants or a cooking degree). Other Positions

You are room service, the bellman, the front desk, their personal attendants, their laundress (washing clothes), sometimes their masseuse, taxi driver, waiter, chef, etc. Get the point? Both old and new boats still work in oyster fishing or compete in the racing aspect of these traditional sailing vessels. At various times of the year Working Boats can be seen in the Fal Estuary either providing views of the practicality of oyster dredging or the excitement of racing. It is the combination of both tradition and innovation which will continue to ensure future sustainability and the preservation of the Working Boats of the Fal. But if you can handle the workload, you’ll return with great memories, new friends, and a fat savings account. ★ These boats constitute a fleet working in the Fal propelled by only sail or oars where oysters are gathered by hand dredging – the last oyster fishery in Europe using these traditional non mechanical means. Alongside the fishing fleet there is also the smaller racing fleet, which with dramatically increased sail areas and coloured topsails, take part during the summer months in local regattas and in Falmouth Week in August. In the United States, the New England area has a smaller yachting scene, made up of smaller boats and more sailing oriented. Your best bet to find crew jobs here is Newport, Rhode Island. Visas & Immigration Advice I initially worked as a stewardess, then began taking jobs as a chef after cooking courses at the Culinary Institute of America, to increase my earning potential.
