About this deal

What I have instead are “lightbulb memories,” bright moments of recollection sparsely scattered across a dark canvas. As someone whose outlook on life is completely different, it was a chore for me to read about her spiritual beliefs (Catholicism and Zen). She is also working to develop effective models for transferring science-based treatments to the clinical community.

I did walk away with a little more understanding of the therapist's perspective and approach to DBT treatment. She says, "You can't think yourself into new ways of acting; you can only act yourself into new ways of thinking. a patient once asked Marsha Linehan, the world-renowned psychologist who developed Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. As other reviewers have pointed out, I often lost track of which decade of her life I was reading about.

Over the years, DBT had saved the lives of countless people fighting depression and suicidal thoughts, but Linehan had never revealed that her pioneering work was inspired by her own desperate struggles as a young woman. Linehan is the founder and the convener of both the Suicide Strategic Planning Group and the DBT Strategic Planning Group. Marsha survived the kind of descent into hell that is characteristic of these patients, but/and she found her way out and vowed to use her life to help bring others out of that same hell.

The best part of the book for me is the title, as building a life worth living I think is a admirable goal for anyone struggling with severe depression and suicidal ideation.Linehan was trained in spiritual directions under Gerald May and Tilden Edwards and is an associate Zen teacher in both the Sanbo-Kyodan-School under Willigis Jaeger Roshi (Germany) as well as in the Diamond Sangha (USA).

Each skill is designed to help you find focus in the present moment, reduce impulsive behavior, and increase a sense of connection to your true self. With God’s blessing and help I was able to piece together enough understanding and DBT skills to move to a much better place than I had ever been in life! She has fabulous YouTube clips, some small, some large, and I also have seen her in action lecturing and speaking with academics and students online, because, lucky for me, I work in an academic library. When I found out recently that Linehan herself was highly suicidal when she was a teenager and was hospitalized in a psychiatric institution, I was intrigued and knew that I wanted to know more about her life. When you have difficulties managing your emotions, it can feel like you're losing control of your whole life.

Her journey in this book is covered quite thoroughly and her story delivered in conversational tone. However, I think other aspects of this memoir could have benefitted from even a bit more development, instead of focusing on DBT so intensely. It was a difficult process—and, more than that, I was about to reveal publicly for the first time extremely intimate details about my life that for decades I had kept a carefully guarded secret, outside of a few very close friends and my family. If you find it difficult to understand, express, and process intense emotions - and most of us do - this book is for you. This book--with its fierce honesty and, for the careful reader, practical advice--will help anyone who has struggled to build a life worth living. I was there to tell the story of how, more than two decades earlier, I had developed a type of behavioral treatment for highly suicidal people, known as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT for short). Of course, it had been in reality the story of my life and I felt like I still had no idea how to handle what I was going through. By age thirty, Stephanie Foo was successful on paper: She had her dream job as an award-winning radio producer at This American Life and a loving boyfriend.
