There were two or three scenes in the book that were well written and maintained my interest, drawing me into the story and the characters, but they were relatively short. I was particularly taken with Jeanne, Marie Catherine's maid, but all the characters are engaging (which makes the threats feel even more real).Haven't we all had a less than perfect relationship that made you think of what life could be like if you could just escape it? One thing I found mildly irritating was the omniscient narrator who popped into the head of whoever happened to be the focus of the scene.The characters are fascinating and very strong, and I love that it is told solely through the perspectives of women.
