About this deal

Turgoose is the picture's heart and soul, and it's a terrifically natural, easy and commanding performance. Turgoose's open face radiates charm, and then, when he goes over to the dark side of racism, a creepy, anti-cherubic scorn: almost like one of the little blond kids in Village of the Damned. But Meadows is always concerned to preserve a sympathetic core to Shaun, and in fact to all the skins. Even the deeply objectionable Combo is shown to be suffering from emotional pain. The smash-hit production of Dear England transfers to the West End this Autumn, following a sold-out run at the National Theatre. Freshwater, Paige (20 September 2020). Like Meadows' earlier pictures, Dead Man's Shoes and A Room for Romeo Brass, This Is England is about younger, vulnerable figures being taken under the wing of older, flawed men, and this personal theme here finds its richest and maturest expression yet. As to whether we should buy its implied leniency about skinhead culture: that is another question. The West Indian influence is advanced as proof that skins were not necessarily racist: yet it can't cancel out Combo's hate campaign against South Asians, the "Pakis" who "smell of curry", a campaign which goes quite unchallenged or even unremarked upon by any of the skins, good or bad. I chose This is England as the first film covered in this Best of British cinema series for a few reasons. Firstly, it’s a film I am very familiar with. I must have first seen it around ten years ago now, give or take a year or two. I’ve grown up with it, and gradually become more aware of its depth over time. It was a personal favourite as a teenager, and I hadn’t seen it since my time in college, so returning to it for this piece was a strange experience. A mix of nostalgia and surprise at new parts of the film which revealed themselves to me for the first time made the film tougher to stomach than usual, though its topics of choice always made it a difficult viewing. a b "Teenager Tommo lands gritty role". BBC News. 27 April 2007. Archived from the original on 1 June 2009 . Retrieved 25 May 2010. Although this first episode is more light hearted in tone than the film with some more obvious comedic set pieces, the director is able to expertly switch to the more dramatic scenes and engage viewers in the various predicaments of his characters. There are several very emotional scenes which work very well and the familiar sounds of the Einaudi piano score punctuate these scenes to great effect. For me one of the things that made the dramatic scenes in the original film so engaging was Shane Meadows' use of music to heighten the emotional impact and I found that he did this very effectively again here. x 26″ Glossy, high quality, used as lobby cards in Italy.
