About this deal

The design on the top of the speaker has been tweaked too. A central circular button where the branding used to be allows you to pair two Wonderboom 2s. This was a feature of the original Wonderboom, but the upgrade here is that long-pressing said buttons on two of the new speakers will pair them in stereo mode. You can pair the Wonderboom 2 with a Wonderboom - but only in mono.

Design winner: Tie (both products feature an excellent design; however, other than the recycled plastic, there isn’t any improvement or change in the design)As a well-designed portable Bluetooth speaker at this price level, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3 certainly has its appeal, but it’s not the only – or the best – option worth considering now. The design on the top of the speaker has also been tweaked, with a circular button where the branding used to be – press this to ‘double up’ the sound by pairing two Wonderboom 2s. This feature was available in the original version, but has been upgraded so that pressing the central button on two new speakers means they now pair in stereo mode. You can still pair old and new Wonderboom models in mono (the older one doesn’t support stereo). Indoors, the performance is rather impressive. In smaller rooms, the speakers can easily fill the space with high-quality sound, providing an immersive audio experience. The wide soundstage these speakers offer also means that you’ll get good sound no matter where you place the speaker in the room. The second-generation version offers enhanced bass on top of the the same balanced, pleasing tonality. It also offers a longer battery, increased durability, stereo pairing and an outdoor option thrown in to boot. For under a ton, this is a good deal.

WONDERBOOM 2 vs Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 3 Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 2 vs Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 3

The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 is a stereo portable speaker that comes equipped with two drivers and two passive radiators. Its driver diameter measures 40 millimeters, and it has a sensitivity of 86 dB. The speaker connects to devices wirelessly through Bluetooth technology, with a range of up to 33 meters. It does not have a 3.5 millimeter connector or AUX input.

Why is Ultimate Ears Boom 3 better than Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2?

The only real improvement with Wonderboom 3 is the Fast Pair feature. And honestly, this feature is pretty cool for those of us that use an Android device. The Wonderboom 2 delivers a sound as cohesive and detailed as we could hope for at the price. The presentation takes a step forward too. There are discrete musical nuances available in the twang of the double bass that weren’t obvious with the original. The Wonderboom 2 is every bit as precise as the original five-star model, yet it delivers a weightier sound while losing none of the core musicality. Unfortunately, no. The Wonderboom 3 can only pair with another Wonderboom 3, while the Wonderboom 2 can pair with another Wonderboom 2 or another Wonderboom. The Wonderboom 2 is designed to be portable and durable, making it suitable for outdoor activities. Its compact size and lightweight construction enable users to take it on-the-go without much hassle, while also ensuring its reliability and durability over time. The speaker is constructed with premium materials that guarantee a long-lasting performance.

As we mentioned earlier, the Wonderboom 2 has an IP67 rating, meaning it now brings with it dust resistance on top of last year’s IPX7 water resistance. You can also drop the speaker repeatedly from 5ft so it’s a speaker that can take a beating whether you’re hiking or at the pool. However, the above assumption is tough to confirm since Ultimate Ears doesn’t like publishing information about battery size or bluetooth version. Again, this Fast Pairing only works with Android devices — so anyone with an iPhone will still have to manually pair the speaker. The other bit of good news is that, thanks to its wraparound grille, the Wonderboom 2 boasts 360 degrees of sound, which means you get the same audio quality wherever you are in relation to the speaker. My strong advice is to keep an eye out for discounts on the UE Wonderboom 2. For all intents and purposes, it can do everything that the Wonderboom 3 can. But with the new version released, it is likely that there are some good sales coming on the older version. This speaker does not offer Wi-Fi, a 3.5mm connector, or an AUX input, which limits its compatibility with certain devices that rely on those connectivity options. However, the built-in Bluetooth functionality provides a versatile and easy-to-use wireless experience. There doesn’t seem to be a noticeable difference in sound quality between the two speakers, even in side-by-side testing. What are the improvements in Wonderboom 3 over Wonderboom 2? While Outdoor Boost does increase overall volume, sound quality takes a noticeable dip when listening at lower volumes. With Outdoor Boost enabled at medium volume, cymbals sound splashy and mids are more emphasized - which is a good thing -and there’s slightly more bass than the original Wonderboom, which helps bring some warmth to the sound while not compromising on the highs. Mids are excellent with vocals sounding natural and detailed. What Hi-Fi?, founded in 1976, is the world's leading independent guide to buying and owning hi-fi and home entertainment products. Neither speaker has a power bank for charging a phone. And, as stated above, both use micro USB charging. Both speakers get 12+ hours at 50% volume. So we give UE points for (almost) living up to their battery life promises. Where Ultimate Ears has made a big fuss with this new speaker is the use of more environmentally friendly materials. The Wonderboom 3 uses “a minimum of” 31% post-consumer recycled plastic (i.e. plastic sourced from end-of-life electronics). The nod towards sustainability is always good to see, and it’s to UE’s credit that the speaker’s build quality is still of a high standard.

Both versions of the Wonderboom are perfect for anyone seeking immersive audio and a wide soundstage. Neither Wonderboom version discloses specifics about the size of the battery. However, the Wonderboom 2 is rated for 13 hours of use, while Wonderboom 3 improves on this slightly with a 14 hour rating. With a sensitivity of 86 decibels, the Wonderboom 2 is capable of producing loud and detailed audio even at lower volumes. It features a Bluetooth range of 33 meters, allowing for convenient wireless streaming without the need for a direct connection. While we aren’t as upset about this feature as some other tech reviewers, the micro-USB charging is an odd design feature. In the 3+ years since the release of the Wonderboom 2, USB-C charging has become an industry standard in portable speakers. Most of us had assumed that the Wonderboom 3 would get this obvious upgrade.
