About this deal

This TV delivers impressive levels of brightness, contrast and definition. It takes advantage of LG’s Alpha9 Gen6 chip, which is used for picture processing and HDR-improving features, like Expression Enhancer and OLED Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro. The upshot is that images look better and clearer, making it a good choice for movie lovers. It’s a great choice for gamers too with four HDMI 2.1 inputs with support for 4K 120Hz, VRR, ALLM, along with FreeSync Premium Pro and Nvidia G-Sync. The image quality is astounding too – especially when it comes to natural-feeling detail. Sony's Cognitive Processor XR is a step above anything else when it comes to creating super-sharp 4K images from streamed content that doesn't feel over-sharpened, and nothing makes sub-4K video look as good. Color and contrast are excellent handled too, especially nuance in dark tones. The one downside is that it isn't very bright – basically, for movie lovers watching in darkened room, it's wonderful, but in a light room it'll get overwhelmed by reflections. Let’s start with what’s good. The bezel is discreet enough to not intrude on the TV viewing experience, and the depth of the set is just 78mm without the stand, making it appreciatively slim in appearance. Picture quality on the X90L is a step up from last year’s Sony X90K, with notably higher brightness and better local dimming. These improvements show a benefit with HDR programs in particular, with an increase in contrast that brings enhanced definition to picture highlights and shadows. Upscaling of regular HD images is also very good, while native 4K ones look wonderfully detailed.

The remote is a similar effort to previous and a slight improvement as it doesn’t attempt to cram as many buttons into a small space. Features Compared to the U7QF, the A7G is a downgrade in features. Where the U7Q had Full Array local dimming the A7G makes do without. It’s not a full house for HDR formats either, with the Hisense able to decode HDR10+ but not officially certified for it. The interface is separated into several sections, but apps is where the action is. The app selection is focused rather than bountiful; Netflix has pride of place on the top row and all the UK catch-up apps are covered (as Freeview Play), with Disney+ and Britbox available also. There’s VIDAA Free, which rounds up a selection of free content from the likes of Plex, Vevo, YouTube and Facebook Watch for more options. TCL’s QM8 Class 4K TVs are the company’s only mini-LED TVs for 2023, but the company clearly wanted to offer something special for its flagship line. What’s notable about the new QM8 Class sets is they are being offered in screen sizes up to a staggering 98 inches. The difference in price here seems drastic considering both examples offer excellent picture quality. It all depends on how much you're willing to pay for extra bells and whistles and design sensibilities, such as the G1's wonderfully thin design and best-in-class options for gaming. This cookie is set by Bazaarvoice. The X90L has a basic, but effective onboard sound system, with tweeters located at the screen’s left and right sides to augment the sound coming from the TV’s bottom-mounted speakers. The TV’s support feet can be elevated to accommodate a soundbar, with the other option being a flush fit of the screen against a TV stand's top surface. Hisense has been making inroads in the UK market with its affordable and feature laden TVs over the past few years, and its latest range is its most ambitious set. With four HDMI 2.1 inputs with 4K 120Hz and VRR support, great Game Bar user interface and a comprehensive smart home interface, only serious home cinephiles are likely to feel that they're missing out on anything. In terms of audio and design, the Hisense is solid as well, with decent bass and dialog clarity for audio and an adjustable feet from a design point of view. The Hisense U8K may not be the perfect TV, but at the price it is, it's certainly one that suits a lot of people's budgets and comes with a wealth of features as a bonus. There are four HDMI inputs here, including two with High Frame Rate 120Hz video and VRR, and one eARC. Smart TV features are handled by the My Home Screen v.7 software, which is more customisable than most and includes all the key streaming services. We’re now onto VIDAA U 5.0 and if there’s a difference between this version and previous one, then I’m not seeing it. That said, despite its plain appearance, there’s no argument about navigation and operation. The VIDAA interface is easy to use and there’s something to be said about an interface that settles for that level of simplicity. If you're looking for a home cinema system with immersive audio but would rather not have a soundbar, the Panasonic LZ2000 is the perfect solution. It offers superb picture quality and impressive audio that's just as good as a serious soundbar.
