I don’t think I’ve ever come across an action camera that’s as neatly or cleverly designed as the Insta360 Go 3. Non-expandable storage and a non-removable battery are both downsides, but this is still a worthwhile purchase if you want as small a camera as possible. It weighs just 35g and fits easily inside a closed palm; we’ve even seen people filming from inside their mouths using it, although we wouldn’t recommend it. The microphone is also simply excellent, capturing our voice without any distortion, and we don’t have to repeat ourselves because something wasn’t picked up. Combine the Go 3 with its Action Pod, and on top of traditional ergonomics, its screen operates just like that of a GoPro, unlocking easy-to-use, touch-screen mode selection tools, control over granular settings, and the ability to playback content.

Though they are positioned near the top of the screen when the Surface Go 3 is in its laptop mode, which means there is minimal distortion. Even when GO 3 is off, simply press the button on the front of the camera to start recording instantly. The model we have in has the classic silver Surface aesthetic, with the Windows logo in a gorgeous chrome finish on the back of the device, on its hinge, where it’s going to get the most attention.The Surface Go 3 has a frankly embarrassingly low battery life, lasting just over 6 hours in our tests. Within the settings, I was able to do things on the touch display that I couldn't do in the smartphone app, such as turn off the LED light on the front of the camera and mute the beeping noise. The GO 3 alone offers enough battery to last 50 minutes, with the Action Pod, you can expect 150-170 minutes of battery life. The camera’s petite size and the plethora of mounting options – sticky pad, magnet, clip and even a magnetic pendant you can wear around your neck – make it a video creator’s dream. The ActionPod is also a great wireless viewfinder, so you can keep an eye on your kids while they're recording away, and with a replaceable lens cover and waterproofing, you won't need to worry about it being able to withstand your brood's wrath.

Even though the setup, when docked, looks like a GoPro or a DJI Action 3, the Action Pod's durability holds the system back from being truly comparable for action. For FreeFrame videos, stabilization is applied during the export process (using the mobile app or Insta360’s computer program) and cannot be specified in the camera.The GO 3 retains the thumb-shaped design of its predecessors, complete with rounded ends and curved edges, albeit in slightly different dimensions.

The GO 3, when placed in the Action Pod, bears a strong resemblance to a GoPro, right down to the graphical user interface. It requires you to put together clips in the Insta360 app but captures the full circular view of the lens, not a rectangular frame. Video recorded in low light situations can look good, too, but you’ll need to be much more careful how you hold the camera. The Go 3 has a built-in 310mAh battery that will get you around 45 minutes of recording time, with an additional two hours of capture supplied by the Action Pod (based on a 1080p/30fps trial w/ Wi-Fi and screen turned off).Everything from bird chirps to distant traffic was compressed in a way that let these background sounds thrive without intruding on what was front and center.
