About this deal

Acer palmatum trees are very hardy (down to -20°C) but their new growth can be quite vulnerable to frosts, so it’s best to plant them in a sheltered spot out of cold winds. Please contact your sites administrator if you believe this other user or machine has unauthorised access. Rake, hoe or fork into the top surface of the soil, and in dry weather, water well for maximum benefit. If you’ve got vine weevils you’ll see little c-shaped white grubs about 10mm long with brown heads amongst the soil and notches in the leaf margins, perhaps accompanied by the culprits - 9mm black beetles with a yellow mark on the wing cases. They need repotting very two or three years, only moving them up a small amount at a time to prevent young, fragile roots drowning in too much moisture.

If your Acer is in the ground it won’t need feeding, but if you want to encourage more growth you can give it a sprinkle of general purpose fertiliser at the start of the growth season (March-April). If you see what looks like wool or fake Hallowe’en cobwebs on your tree, it may well be scale insects, which work in roughly the same way. New Acers Bare-root plants: (Plant between October-March when ground is not frozen or water-logged).In the garden: Apply Acer Feed as a spring top-dressing at a rate of 120g/m2 beneath the spread of the branches. All you need to apply is to have a debit or credit card, to be over 18 years of age, and to be a UK resident. You can prevent leaf scorch by planting (or positioning your pot) in a sheltered spot out of direct sunlight where the tree will get some dappled shade. Organic - one feed lasts a whole season Acer Feed: Improves plant health, quality and vitality Produces stunning, vibrant foliage For best results, apply Acer Feed to the soil during planting and then as a top dressing in spring.

Thank you very much Fairygirl, I appreciate that, fortunately they always come back each year but I would like to give them the best to prolong their best growth. That looks like a small pot for the size of the specimen and no amount of liquid feed will compensate for roots that get too warm in a small pot.In the garden apply as a spring top-dressing at a rate of 120g/m2 beneath the spread of the branches.

Vitax Organic Acer Feed contains the three major plant foods - nitrogen (N), phosphate P phosphorus) and potash (K potassium), that make up NPK, together with natural Magnesium (Mg) and trace elements to encourage healthy leaf growth and vibrant colours. You can then spray the affected areas with a solution of water and oil or soap ( recipes here) which will prevent the insects clinging on and suffocate any that do. In a pot I'd avoid any organic fertiliser as it would perform better in the ground where you have the microorganisms to break them down properly. Vitax Acer Feed contains the three major plant foods – nitrogen, phosphate and potash, together with natural magnesium and trace elements to encourage healthy leaf growth and vibrant colours.

Another option is a slow release fertiliser put in the soil at the start of spring and left alone for the season. Contains a rich mix of nitrogen, phosphate and potash along with magnesium and trace elements to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. As an annual feed for Acer, in pots the feed can be mixed with compost when repotting, or worked into the surface of existing pots as an annual top-dressing.
