About this deal

No CGI or over the top special effects and gore here, just honest story telling and the result is that it's actually the best (and most horrific) film I've ever seen. Whereas the previous releases had no extra features, the Special Edition included commentaries and associated documentaries.

Talking to Jackson – who went onto enjoy Hollywood success, directing the 1992 blockbuster The Bodyguard – what is immediately impressive is his knowledge of his subject matter. Never wanting to succumb to a glossy, idealised struggle, Hines resolutely ensures that stylised heroism is kept as far away from Threads as possible. The Blu-ray release retains all of the extras of the DVD release (audio commentaries with lead actress Karen Meagher and director Mick Jackson; PDF of Radio Times articles and letters; and the documentaries ‘Shooting the Annihilation’, ‘Auditioning for the Apocalypse’, ‘Destruction Designer’ and ‘Stephen Thrower on Threads’), plus an option to watch Threads in widescreen in a shorter cut of the film approved by the director. It's a damaged Britain which has, in part, received a significant sucker punch from the abysmal civil defence response and acts as a damning indictment of political responsibility.Although the British public were well aware that relations between the USA and Russia had reached an all time low, they were unaware, in 1984, just how close the world had come to nuclear war in the previous five years. Originally broadcast in September 1984 on BBC2, Threads is a drama-documentary which presents a disturbing look at the effects of a nuclear attack on Britain.

Initially bearing all the hallmarks of a kitchen sink drama, Threads begins with the blossoming relationship between Ruth and her partner Jimmy Kemp (Reece Dinsdale) hitting an unexpected road bump in the form of an unplanned pregnancy. But all fans of cult British television must have at least one version of the remastered Threads in their collection. The final shot is a freeze frame of Jane screaming as she's handed her lifeless, silent baby and sums up the true horror of the nuclear aftermath. It was first broadcast on BBC Two on 23 September 1984 at 9:30 pm, and achieved the highest ratings on the channel (6.And, now, after undergoing a 2K restoration from the original 16mm prints, Threads has been remastered for DVD by Simply Media in a two-disc release. Over the phone, he speaks with authority on everything from the history of arms control to the upcoming renewal of the New Start treaty – the only existing arms control pact between the US and Russia. While viewers who caught A Guide to Armageddon may have well felt a sense of unease, it would little prepare them for Jackson’s next project, given the green light in late 1983. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs last year, Brooker cited the film as a formative moment of his early adolescence.
