Naomi’s husband Colin passed away suddenly two years ago and life has moved on well for Naomi she has settled into life on her own in her beautiful home by the sea and has her daughters and friends and is very happy. After being transferred from Haiti to New York to reconcile with her mother, Sophie finds secrets that no 12-year-old should have access to. The only way for her to recover is to return to the women who nurtured her in Haiti. Edwidge Danticat's debut novel is a tale of grace, power, and heartbreak like none other. Confessions of a Domestic Failure by Bunmi Laditan But these are very specific problems that I know about through other means and probably wouldn’t affect other people’s interest or enjoyment in the story, and to be fair didn’t affect mine either! The story centres around Naomi and her two daughters Martha and Willow. Naomi has recently been widowed and is trying to rebuild her life in the little village of Tilsham by the sea. I loved this!! One of those stories when you're sad to leave the characters as you immediately feel at ease with them and want to carry on watching over them as they come to terms with the loss in their lives, but begin to move on.

It could've been that I hyped it up, that I'm not totally the right demographic, or that the title is a bit more misleading that I originally thought. But that isn't to say that this book didn't touch me. A captivating story about a mother’s relationship with her two daughters, to protect them she has kept secrets and her daughters now understanding their mother is a free and independent woman, she has every right to live where she chooses, start a new relationship and fall in love. Mothers and Daughter is both a compelling and hugely relatable family drama centred around recently widowed sixty-three-year-old Naomi and her thirty-something adult daughters, Martha and Willow, as they move forward with their lives. Just over two years ago, Naomi’s husband, Colin, and the father of both her daughters, died suddenly leaving her a widow in the Tilsham cottage the family once shared. Having rebuilt her life and reconnected by random chance with Ellis, a friend from university, Naomi is ready to start afresh but worried about both her daughter’s reaction to a new man, especially that of Martha who idolised her father. The truth of the marriage and the real man behind Colin’s bonhomie is something that Naomi has kept from both her daughters, but as Martha and Naomi each meet Ellis, they are harbouring concerns of their own.. When Elise Schiller's daughter died of a heroin overdose in 2014, her life was permanently altered. Elise began questioning the American substance-abuse treatment system after her daughter died at a treatment facility in Colorado. Her daughter had been unsuccessful in more than five programs, making it clear that there was a larger problem at hand. True to its title, Even If Your Heart Would Listen portrays the story of a mother whose devotion to her daughter is unshakeable no matter what occurs. Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria SempleElizabeth and Mary - Bream explained their relationship in a way that I had not gone deep enough to understand, before. Nikki Eaton is a reporter for a small town newspaper in her thirties living life on her terms. When her widowed mother, Gwen is killed in a random act of violence, the loss impacts Nikki more than she ever saw coming. The novel chronicles the year following her mother’s death as Nikki grieves this sudden loss and tries to make sense of the tragedy. Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou

Unbeknown to her daughters, Naomi has recently met a Ellis an old love from her past. He has awakened feelings and companionship which Naomi had forgotten about. Should Naomi take a chance on a new beginning ? What will her daughters feel about her having her own life? In the fine novel My Name is Lucy Barton, a young woman awakens from undergoing surgery in the hospital to see her mother – someone she hasn’t spoken to in years – by her bedside. In the five days that follow, they don’t say much. But they manage to cover everything. Although the relationship between the three women is at the heart of the story, other relationships are bought under the spotlight including marital problems, the issues facing blended families, control and abuse and deciding how much of your real self that you let others see. The author also convincingly captured the range of emotions and tensions which can arise when a widowed parent begins a new relationship, only to find their happiness threatened by disapproval from adult offspring. Without introducing any spoilers by giving examples, there were moments when I found myself feeling furious with Martha’s controlling, manipulative behaviour as she attempted to derail her mother’s relationship with Ellis!

In the New Testament, Christian Scriptures, reading about Mary, the details shared were amazing, and right there, in words I had read, but did not quite embrace. Bream shared beautifully. (Between Bream's interpretation and watching the first two seasons of THE CHOSEN, I feel "baptized" in powerful words and feelings.)

This one is no exception. The relationship of three women, a mother and her two grown up daughters and how they have dealt with the death of their father/husband two years previously is explored in the novel. There is mention of the coronavirus pandemic, but it isn’t really about that, and it seems to take place when we’re all out of this mess! The three women, Naomi, Martha and Willow are all in relationships of various different stages. Naomi, at 60 odd is with the one who got away at university. Martha is in a stable satisfying marriage and Willow is finally with a man that is viewed as perfect boyfriend material by the rest of the family. Evan Hunter was a professional writer, and I say that with the utmost respect. He wrote for a living. For money. Using several pseudonyms he wrote over a hundred novels from mainstream pop to police procedural to porn. His prose is truly the work of a pro: easily readable, no showing off. I love this guy. My favorite thing about this book was breaking apart these well known stories (at least imo), and digging into these people's heads. It really gave me a greater appreciation for some of them, and cleared up questions I haven't bothered to ask (but definitely wondered). The Mothers, the acclaimed author’s debut novel, is stunning in its ability to evoke the realities of a young woman’s life when she is just on the cusp of becoming an independent woman. And it tops the list of our take on the best fiction about mothers and daughters. Divide Me By Zero is one of the best evocations of the experience of losing a mother to illness that we’ve read in quite a long time. The protagonist is frequently told that she behaves like a child, despite being a middle-aged mother of her own daughter. There are many twists and turns that take us from Russia to Queens and then to the suburbs of New York City. But the beating heart is the devotion that this mother-daughter pair share – and the duty of such a daughter when her mother’s time has come. Mothers and Daughters is a mainstream pop novel about four women. I’m the wrong gender to judge if he got the emotional issues right, but I detected no false notes. And the great thing about Evan Hunter is that you detect nothing about the writing, it’s invisible. The story flows like a river.

My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout Ruth and Naomi - I'd not thought about the fact that Ruth didn't just take Naomi as her mother, but took on Naomi's God, to be her own. So beautiful! While attempting to be the best mother she can be, Ashley Keller isn't doing so well. She thinks she'll finally be the mother she's always wanted to be after signing up for the Motherhood Better boot camp. Author of The Honest Toddler takes a look at the demands that society places on mothers and gives the idea of being a great mother doesn't require you to be perfect. The Daughter by Lucy Dawson

see luxury in a new light

The best novels and other fiction books to read about relationships between mothers and daughters in honor of Mother’s Day this year. 1. The Mothers by Brit Bennett. This is the story of how one young woman faces the world without a mother who was absent too much even when she was alive. And how a writer perseveres and finds her voice despite the weight of student loans, no health insurance, narcissistic lovers and daily toil as a restaurant waitress in a wealthy town. The imagery is beautiful, and the details have the raw clank of truth. Raised in Pennsylvania, the protagonist of What We Lose, Thandi, views the world of her mother’s childhood in Johannesburg as both impossibly distant and ever present. She tries to connect these dislocated pieces of her life, and as her mother succumbs to cancer, Thandi searches for an anchor—someone, or something, to love. We watch Thandi’s life unfold, from losing her mother and learning to live without the person who has most profoundly shaped her existence, to her own encounters with romance and unexpected motherhood. A touching and honest portrayal of a mother and her two daughters dealing with that thing called life.
