About this deal

It was much lamented when the black bottle recipe changed from this blend to the current one which I can clearly understand why. While the likes of Laphroaig and Ardbeg gave Black Bottle its most obviously phenolic Islay character, the blend was centred on the lightly-peated Bunnahabhain.

Finish: The grains take over in the aftertaste – fortunately, in this case, the finish is quite quick and flat. Now, it is possible that I have had a duff bottle and that Black Bottle is a beautifully brilliant bargain. The resultant whisky was once again presented in an eye-catching black glass bottle based on a 1906 Graham family design. Black Bottle was introduced in 1879 by Charles, David and Gordon Graham, members of a family of Aberdeen tea merchants who had branched out into whisky blending. Black Bottle would make a great addition to a spread of whiskies you’d give to someone interested in “smoky” Scotch.

Depending on where you live, the time it may take for your exchanged product to reach you, may vary. Being from Aberdeen, the original recipe would have included malts from in and around the Aberdeenshire area. This expertly blended Scotch Whisky owes its reputation to a finely honed recipe and a large dose of Victorian know-how. Founded by the Grahame family, the brand was popular with both domestic consumers and the maritime community, making it well-known among sailors. On the other side you have some baking spices, fragrant peat smoke, and an almost gingerbread spice/sweet mix.

With this relaunched bottling, they're aiming for a blend and flavour reminiscent of Black Bottle whisky from when it was first made in 1879, which means the smokiness is balanced with fruitier notes.Black Bottle stands out from the crowd of blended Scotches with its retro presentation, and if its previous Islay-heavy character has been muted, ‘new’ Black Bottle remains a dram with a very distinctive style. Palate Candied ginger and cigar box, with charred herbs, chocolate spread on brown bread and a drizzle of golden syrup. Our Black Bottle blenders gently marry a select group of Islay and Highland Speyside grain and malt whiskies, then double mature in charred Virgin Oak barrels for a distinct, rich smoky flavour like no other. The classic blend combines Islay malts with Highland, Speyside and Lowland whiskeys that are blended with mild grain whiskeys.

They decided to change its nature – the old version (which was revitalised in 1990) was a blend of almost every Islay malt whisky and grains from different regions. The above-noted alcohol content may differ from the alcohol content displayed on the bottle label due to the timing of changes in vintage dates or production lot codes. Although the lightly peated Bunnahabhain was at it's heart all Islay's working distilleries were represented and so Black Bottle became very phenolic.
