About this deal

And that image was the key to a great well of ideas that had been burbling inside me, ideas gathered from research and from my imagination. I had read a huge amount of folklore while growing up, which ranged from the Brothers Grimm to Beowulf, Nordic sagas, and the Aeneid, along with contemporary fantasy and science fiction. In addition, I’d learned about weaponry, food, clothing, and customs from the Middle Ages, which is roughly the era I envision Eragon living in. Armed with that information, I daydreamed the scenes with my characters. Then I took pen to paper and tried to recreate those images with words. As the manuscript developed, I drew additional inspiration from good literature, music that sends tingles up my spine, great movies, and nature—the soaring Beartooth Mountains that edge the valley where I live, and the Yellowstone River that rushes by my home. This natural beauty helped me envision my fantasy world; at times, I could almost see Saphira flying over the sharp, snowcapped mountain peaks that I see from my window. Really pay attention to what does or doesn’t make sense. Consistency and internal logic are super important.

Volume 2 of Tales from Alagaësia will probably show up sooner rather than later. I have a couple more short stories I want to write this year. We shall see. Depends on how much promotional stuff I have to do for To Sleep. Plot your stories out beforehand. Make sure you understand the story well enough that you could narrate it to someone else if need be. If you can’t, then you probably don’t have an actual story. That and write about the things you love the most. It’ll help get you through a large project. The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm includes new characters and some already encountered in the original series, and tells of the many challenges Eragon and Saphira face as they establish the Dragon Riders in their new home far to the east of Alagaësia, integrating stories about Murtagh, Angela, and a village of Urgals. Angela spirited the girl away and sought to raise her without attempted kidnappers and murderers surrounding her.

This volume features three original stories set in Alagaësia, interspersed with scenes from Eragon's own unfolding adventure. Included is an excerpt from the memoir of the unforgettable witch and fortune-teller Angela the herbalist . . . penned by Angela Paolini, the inspiration for the character, herself! It both furthers the character's mystery and serves to give us a peak at the science and science fiction woven into the fantasy world of Alagaësia—masterfully showing us how they would perceive our known and unknown facts; with the promise of more!

Retailers:

Now he is struggling with an endless sea of tasks: constructing a vast dragonhold, wrangling with suppliers, guarding dragon eggs and dealing with belligerent Urgals and haughty elves. Then a vision from the Eldunarí, unexpected visitors and an exciting Urgal legend offer a much-needed distraction and a new perspective. The only real break with physics I had with my magic system was the assumption that living things could directly manipulate different forms of energy with their minds. That’s it. That’s magic. Everything else directly follows from that assumption. And as best I could, I tried to be consistent with that assumption. Murtagh and Roran: Fans looking to see more of the two warriors will be happy with Book 5. [ S1] It’s possible that Murtagh (and Thorn’s) appearance will include further developments on the fan-wished Murtagh/Nasuada relationship. [ S2] In fact, as he puts it himself in the Afterword, he wrote the first version of “The Worm of Kulkaras” a bit over two years ago as a means of clearing his head between sections of a larger sci-fi project (which I'm anticipating, achingly).
