About this deal

I can easily give it 5 stars, particularly since I liked it so much and generally despise horror (as opposed to horror comedy) based on this legendary creature.

In the isolated Icelandic fishing village of Siglufjörður, a rookie cop newly transplanted from Reykjavík has his mettle tested by the claustrophobic conditions—and a murder. Jónasson spins an involving tale of small-town police work that vividly captures the snowy setting that so affects the rookie cop. They are forced to seek refuge when Vigil suffers severe trauma and injury in a fall and are now along surrounded by the harsh elements of nature and something evil and unknown. Years later another storm is forecast for Conventry and those that lived through the last one are edgy and afraid of what this one will bring. I can’t think of another novel where snow, in all of its various manifestations, has ever been described so accurately or completely.

Golden does a good job of not letting the story stall but I did have to suspend belief at several points in the book. If a Golden Age crime novel was to emerge from a literary deep freeze then you’d hope it would read like this.

is best enjoyed alone and possibly with the aid of an alcoholic beverage as the silence and tension can be unbearable. You know this sucker isn't going to be a sweet little storm but of course I had to know what was going to happen. The group stumbles on to this little run down cabin where they can hold up until the blizzard was over. Or is it just that the prevailing wisdom on what’s right and what’s wrong isn’t always congruent with legality? His new home is billed as a town where "nothing ever happens," but Ari Thor soon learns that is far from the truth.

The medical jargon gets a little heavy at times, but the story is almost entirely from the point of view of a surgeon, so the language is certainly fitting. However, the storm and the broken leg are the least of their troubles, when something far, far worse lurks out there in the dark.Ari Thór leaves unfinished business behind him in Reykjavík in the shape of his medical student girlfriend and his own interrupted training for the priesthood. Ari is suddenly dragged into the life of the community when a young woman is brutally murdered and her unconscious and bleeding body lefty on the snow. Swan reaches middle age, burnt out on corporate America he begins smoking pot, which leads to drug runs to Acapulco (oh my God – the gateway drug! You might think that Christopher Golden's Snowblind is about restless ghosts and the skeery ice monsters that live in whiteout snowstorms, and it is, but it's also a meditation on loss and how love is what really survives after death.
