The pancha is worn by many conservative Jain men when they visit Derasars or Basadis for puja; unstitched clothing is believed by some Jains to be "less permeable to pollution" and therefore more appropriate for religious rituals than other garments. [15] They also wear a loose and unstitched cloth, shorter than the pancha on top. Much of their exuberant decor survives today, including a garden featuring statues and a fountain as well as a number of lavish, sometimes erotic, frescoes. One such fresco, located at the home’s entrance, features Priapus, the Greek god of fertility, with a large phallus balancing on a scale along with a bag of money. More erotic frescoes are contained in a small room that researchers think may have been used as a brothel. Paintings [ edit ] A Victorian rendering of paintings in the Ixion room House of the Vetti by Luigi Bazzani (watercolor) before 1927

Overview

Ariadne lies on a large red cloth spread on the ground. Her legs are extended to the left and her torso twists towards the viewer. Her left hand touches the red cloth while her right hand is raised to her mouth as she gazes at the retreating ship to the left. Cupid stands behind Ariadne and places his left hand on her left shoulder, pointing with his right hand towards the shop in the left hand section of the scene. The ship is manned by three figures. The first the helmsman and he is seated at the stern, leaning forward slightly, with the rudder in his right hand. This figure is possibly Theseus. Two smaller figures sit on either side of the mast. One holds the oar and the other adjust the sail. A fisherman stands in the lower left corner. [27] Hero and Leander [ edit ] Once they had secured their freedom, the two men “reached the highest ranks of local society, at least economically,” Zuchtriegel tells the Associated Press’ Francesco Sportelli. Based on their extravagant home, “they evidently tried to show their new status also through culture and through Greek mythological paintings, and it’s all about saying, ‘We’ve made it and so we are part of this elite.’” Cort, John E (2001). Jains in the World: Religious Values and Ideology in India. Oxford University Press. p.221. doi: 10.1093/0195132343.001.0001. ISBN 9780195132342. In the past, historians thought the two men may have been brothers. But Zuchtriegel says they were more likely unrelated individuals enslaved by the same person, whose name was Aulus Vettius.
