About this deal

Fern Britton, broadcaster, presenter and author, has released her sixth novel “The Postcard”. We caught up with her to find out what inspired the story and how gardens help her unwind. A British television presenter and author, Fern Briton is a household name for many throughout the United Kingdom. Communicating with a wider audience on a regular basis, she’s become a highly recognizable personality for many on a regular basis. This is largely due to her accessible style and approach, something which she has brought with her into her writing. Producing numerous novels over the years, she really sets herself apart, with her engaging, compelling, and extremely evocative style. I couldn't reconcile the girl who slept with a virtual stranger (twice) and who abandoned her children when she ran away to find this man, with the woman who returned. Sennen abandoned her family as a 17 year old after her life became a little overwhelming. With two small children that she left for her parents to bring up, she carves out a nomadic life for herself. We learn more about her life and also the anguish her disappearance caused both her parents and her little boy. In 2011 Fern Britton would write her first novel, which would be titled ‘New Beginnings,’ and it would be a stand-alone romance novel. The following year in 2012 she would start her ‘Hidden Treasures’ series of romance novels, starting with the book also named ‘Hidden Treasures.’ These titles would fast see her becoming successful, as many would come to appreciate her as a fully fledged author in her own right.

The Postcard is a compelling read, made all the more so thanks to the stunning Cornish setting. You can tell how much Britton adores the place because the seaside walks and descriptions of village life are so lovingly told. You can almost smell the salty sea air and picture the rounders match at the Pendruggan summer fair. I need to confess something. I am actually quite disgusted with myself. Promise you won't hold it against me? Set in a small village in Cornwall, the novel was warm and welcoming. There were an eclectic mix of characters who endeared themselves to the reader. It was a pleasure to get to know them. My new book The Postcard was inspired by the one thing that the vast majority of us have in common – family. The dynamics of families is endlessly fascinating. Loving, destructive, misunderstood, enriching, supportive and painful all at once. In my story, two sisters have grown up with an ambivalence towards each other which, unless aired, will destroy their connection. Jealousies, old slights and parental lies are discovered. A perfect day for me would be to have an hour or two in the garden, an hour out on my bike or walking the dogs with my husband , and two or three hours writing. The combination is excellent for clearing the mind but of course real life turns up in the shape of school runs and shopping! The garden is the place where I can really lose myself and often very useful plot lines and characters form in my mind. My favourite thing is to fiddle in the greenhouse, drinking tea and listening to The Archers.Beautifully written with heart wrenching moments, the story unfolds over the decades, with characters you will come to love - some more than others! This review is part of The Postcard blog tour. Thank you very much to HarperCollins for sending me the book.

But when her sister turns up to share the news that her mother has died at the same as her popular television programme is cancelled Penny struggles to cope. Her cry for help is noticed but not properly heard and it takes an outsider to realise what is going on as Penny's past is laid bare for all to see.The novel delved into the topic of mothers. They come in different forms and can make or mar a child. There are several within the book. Fern Britton anchored the Pride of Britain Awards in 2002 and was one among the panellists on the satirical panel show, Have I Got News for You. I really enjoyed the other characters introduced throughout, especially Ella who is a really sweet soul, and I do hope there are plans to follow on with her story as the search for her family after the death of her grandmother was really intriguing and the ending did seem to leave it open for more! Wonderful plot and beautifully written - this is a book of love, family, broken and fixed hearts. This is a book that will make you cry while waiting for a train, and laugh out loud while drinking a hot chocolate in a coffee shop. I had the pleasure to receive a copy of this book from GoodReads and HarperCollins. This was the first book I have read from Fern Britton, and I know it won’t be my last for sure!
