About this deal

Surrounded by stacks of guides and maps, I sat cross-legged on the floor of our flat, poring over routes, flagging up significant events, and planning with as much precision as such a journey would allow for. It just lacked a warmth of personality to it, I know it's a non-fiction book but I was still hoping for a story, not just an advanced version of that school assignment "What I did on my holidays.

Around the World in 80 Trains : A 45,000-Mile Adventure Around the World in 80 Trains : A 45,000-Mile Adventure

Why waste an opportunity to absorb all that a place and its people have to offer by shooting in and out? It seems to be that no matter where in the world Rajesh and her boyfriend explored, people were willing to share their stories, knowledge, food and their company with few exceptions. It is not always super fast, though some of the high-speed trains have made serious inroads into flying times, the main point of trains is to take the time to see the countries that you are passing through and absorb the culture in the places that you stop. In some of the countries, she goes into a lot of detail, highlighting the political situation in Tibet or expanding on newsworthy stories to add depth to the narrative. The journey is one of constant movement and mayhem, as the pair strike up friendships and swap stories with the hilarious, irksome and ultimately endearing travellers they meet on board, all while taking in some of the earth's most breathtaking views. What a waste it would be, to travel around Europe, Russia, Mongolia, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Canada, and America, with no one to build and share memories. This one is hard to rate - interesting read at times but I did find it hard to get through sometimes, and just wasn’t what I expected. It can't really be read as a sequel because there's little apart from the author's experience in Indian trains, that gets carried forward to this book.

Around the World in 80 Trains by Monisha Rajesh | Waterstones

There was so much humanity with her, we really enjoyed her company, she was getting off before us, and she gave us three little red little strings with symbols of buddhas on the end and nigella seed. Packing up her rucksack - and her fianc, Jem - Monisha embarks on an unforgettable adventure that will take her from London's St Pancras station to the vast expanses of Russia and Mongolia, North Korea, Canada, Kazakhstan, and beyond. It is good reading in our current time of restricted travel in 2020, and does make you want to hey out and see the world, and enjoy it by train. That’s the lovely thing about trains, you can be flexible and, that’s something you just can’t do on planes, it gives you the freedom. Exactly five years ago to the day, I’d stepped off the Charminar Express in Chennai, marking my eightieth train journey around India. Travelling by train allows you to see a country completely change from suburbs to deserts, was there any journey which landscape stuck out?
