About this deal

In the end, you’ll notice I ended up playing with the rulebook up on the table (see above) taking up tons of space! Both of these games should be in your collection before Monster Island, but if you have them, why not treat yourself to something a little bit different?

That’s not a bad thing per se: players do have a lot of agency on their turn—It’s just that turns feel very solitary, so you don’t want too many players waiting for you. But, while it may never be the monster hit its predecessor was, the cheerful presentation and variety of game styles in King of Monster Island should still ensure you can have a whale of a time. Most games have no problem with The Chair Test: see the rulebook for Agents Of SMERSH: Epic Edition on the chair above. A.s have ravaged the planet, an elderly Anthony Hicks mentioned releasing every monster on Monster Island in a desperate attempt to stop the creatures, but even they fell. In that game, a particularly lucky set of rolls could swing the game massively in your favour, even put you in contention out of nowhere.Players can also lock unused dice faces from their roll on their board space for other players to use later, another powerful tool to leverage in forward planning. The set-up is phenomenal: it’s all described with a great picture over two pages It’s very easy to get set-up and going! That said, I’ll probably start rotating in Tokyo favourites like Gigasaur and Cyber Kitty before long. On the one hand, the dice are so satisfying to roll and the essential mechanic hasn’t changed since King Of Tokyo.

Whilst the enemy monster can take damage, minions cannot and must be killed outright if the players want to get rid of them – which requires both luck and planning. To win, the players must cooperatively take out the main Boss: see above for the Boss powers and the Boss Hit Points/Fame Counter. Unfortunately, in adding complexity there is even more randomness thrown into the mix and it too often feels like if you lost it was because of a run of negative event cards (this has happened several times) and some of the wins have felt a little bit easy just because the cards and dice ran your way. Dropping boss dice into the volcano is both a fun and effective gimmick, although we’ve seen something similar before in The Loop. There is a notion of movement, as players can usually only do things if they are the zone with the thing of interest. It’s not quite as complicated a co-op dice game as, say, the Reckoners (which we reviewed here and here), but it’s close. Planning your turns around what your allies do is essential to surviving the attacks of the enemy monster and its minions, as well as getting in your own attacks.
