About this deal

The Force (2017) is a crime thriller by Don Winslow. Nominated for the 2018 Barry Award and the 2018 Anthony Award, The Force explores police force corruption through the eyes of a crooked NYPD detective sergeant who fights gangs, drugs, and murderers. What most people don’t know is that although he’s good at his job, he steals money from each drug bust. It’s only a matter of time before he’s caught. Critics praise the book for its realism and a well-paced plot. Winslow is a bestselling American author. Before writing, he worked as a private investigator. Many of his novels are now major motion pictures. Din hopes to reunite the creature with the Jedi. He eventually meets Ahsoka Tano, who is on the hunt for General Thrawn. She tells Din to head to Tython and use a special stone to call to any Jedi who may be out there. Ahsoka also reveals the creature's real name: Grogu. BETRAYAL begins approximately 4 months into year 40 ABY (based on a 12-month/368-day calendar)...something like 122 days into year 40 ABY." ― Sue Rostoni [6] ABY-11 ABY - A lone gunfighter – Din Djarin – makes his way through the outer reaches of the galaxy where he stumbles upon a young-ish green creature. The warrior goes on the run, hoping to keep the creature away from harm, and ends up adopting the young creature as his own.

Human life, frailty, and nuances of life on the street, love, loss, greed and power. There are real people out there behind the drugs and poverty. Denny does make a difference, and the reader may want him to come out on top, but he’s a bad guy. Books that stir empathy and the gunning for the protagonist that is deeply flawed, unethical, dirty, fraudulent – at the same time as having good qualities as well.

Unlikely alliances! Having failed her plans for revenge thus far, Shussalina goes into exile, and the universe is seemingly at peace once again. However, a strange new alien race, the Glotzians, appear. Surrounding the Galactic Council's homeworld, they demand immediate surrender. Tanskler and the New Dragonstar Force race to its rescue, but find their new Glotzian foes too much to handle. During their retreat, the Dragonstar Force rescues an old drifter, who turns out to be the mysterious Montelvaughn. He brings them to the far reaches of space, where they meet Grimmtongue the Nebula Wyrm, the most ancient of all dragons, who promises to help, for a price. BBY - Rebels secure their first significant victory over the Empire at Scarif – though in the ultimate downer, everybody involved in recovering the Death Star plans dies. (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) A few months go by, and Devon starts a war with the Dominicans. The Dominicans appoint a new leader, Carlos Castillo. He plans to kill Devon and dominate the New York drug scene. Denny’s boss calls him in to tell him that he’s not working hard enough on the case. He moves around members of Denny’s task force; telling him to get the job done or he won’t be leading the team for much longer. Winslow's writing, with its torrents of profane, single-sentence paragraphs, is as potent as ever, but his story's trajectory is familiar, particularly for fans of the show The Shield. Despite those reservations, this propulsive novel should be eagerly welcomed by readers of Ken Bruen.

This book has already been optioned as a film, and if done well it should prove to be an impactful one. At one point he says something like – “I’ll fight fair when everyone else does.” In other words, following the procedure and observing constitutional and civil rights runs contrary to practicing the actual methods of bringing justice. Malone has tapped into a primitive, street justice where a beating – or even an execution – serves the greater good more than what is sanctioned by law. Lots of surface camaraderie amongst fellow officers, but it clearly becomes evident every man is out for himself. Denny’s downfall is hinged on being what he said he would never be – what they all said they wouldn’t be. Grogu calls to the Jedi but is then captured by the evil Moff Gideon, who holds the Darksaber blade. Din is helped by Boba Fett – who is on the search for his armor – and the former heiress of Mandalore, Bo-Katan to beat Moff Gideon. They almost succeed, when a battalion of Dark Trooper droids arrive. Grogu's call to the Jedi is heard and Luke Skywalker saves the day. Skywalker then takes Grogu away to be trained as a Jedi. (The Mandalorian)

Don Winslow’s The Force turned out to be the perfect choice for my inaugural Metro Link book-club-of-one. In fact, as soon as I finished, I began to miss it.
