About this deal

It should be noted of course that this is only one interpretation of the events, it is in the end a fictional account. Notorious gangster, Pat Tate, rises through the ranks of Essex's criminal underworld, and battles rival drug dealers, vicious prison inmates and gets double-crossed by drug lord Frank Harris. Rise of the Footsoldier follows the rise of Carlton Leach from a football hooligan to becoming a member of a notorious gang of criminals who rampaged their way through Essex in the late eighties and early nineties.

This was the view people had of the characters though be it the truth or hyped up in a fictional way. If I was to say that Rise of the Footsoldieris quite an obnoxious film it would probably sound negative but in truth it’s not. Things get even worse when he meets notorious hard man Pat Tate and local drug dealer Craig Rolfe, culminating in the Rettendon Range Rover murders of 1995. The acting in Rise of the Footsoldierat times is quite hit and miss at times, some scenes lack the power that is required but there are certain actors who do rise to the occasion to instil their characters with just the right amount of malice. But Harris is long dead and the middle-man Terry Fisher (Andrew Loveday) offers Pat the biggest drug deal of his life.

The film opens with Tucker confronting an apparent rival, Bernard O’Mahoney (Vinnie Jones) over patch-rights to a local nightclub. All Tony wants is to make it back in time to support his friend Nigel Benn at the boxing match of his life. Walking dangerous back-streets, confronting ruthless kingpins with merciless force, stopping at nothing to get vengeance, as all around him implodes. As his drug habit grows, so do the deals, violence, and stakes, threatening to spill over into an unprecedented gang war and the unravelling of everything Tucker has worked for.The British gangster movie Rise of the Footsoldier from 2007 was released in a Extreme Extended Cut on Blu-ray in 2012. With Hyena and Muscle, Johnson demonstrates a transition into a more mainstream space is possible for such violent, male-centric films. Who’d have bet, fifteen years after the release of Rise of the Footsolider, there would be a cinema release for a fifth film in the franchise; a franchise whose continued presence epitomises success in low-budget British filmmaking of the last twenty years. As of now, it is has not been confirmed whether Vengeance is intended to be the final film in the series. TimeOut Film Guide (2011 edition) reviewer David Jenkinson describes Rise of the Footsoldier as "a repugnant gangland romp in which ruffians get tooled up with axe handles, baseball bats and Stanley knives then knock ten bells out of each other for two hours.
