About this deal

GC: The funny thing is I wouldn’t say I was particularly nostalgic. I enjoy retro games but I’d never talk about the ‘good old days’. Things are much better now, in terms of the games and consoles themselves. MC: The vast majority of games are up to PEGI 12, and I have one or two PEGI 16 recommended, like Halo 3 – where we have a sign out that says this game is PEGI rated.

GC: Is there no way to have, say, a video montage, or something, of those types of games, to explain why they’re not there? I mean, something like Final Fantasy 7 is incredibly important to the history of gaming and it’s not represented here at all. Each of these subjects has a whole world of classroom games for you to really make KS2 science fun for your students. We’ve created the ultimate list of science games for KS2 to help you put together the best lesson plan possible. 8 KS2 science games and activities for kids MC: Yeah, there’s a few principles for what I’ve chosen to put in there. One is whether it’s family friendly, so there are no BBFC age-rated or restricted games in there. The design, test and iterate loop that became so synonymous with the game is still there. The on-ramp is still delivered through the warm-up level with the core game challenge remaining in three tranches of puzzles of increasing complexity. We’ve also faithfully recreated all the physical science phenomena in the new technology. The games we play online tend to be modern first person shooters. Not that I particularly love the quality of them, but they’re just accessible and it’s the sort of consensus. Being quite competent in first person shooters we went straight for the N64 GoldenEye. We were terrible at it. I could not believe the control system was as it was on the N64 until you start trying to play it again. And so there is that funny thing about nostalgia when nostalgia meets reality.Your students will discover the mysterious forces that affect the world around us, from gravity to magnets, pushes and pulls. A very simple game, tug of war engages kids’ muscles and their competitive spirit while also teaching them science. All you’ll need for this is a strong but soft rope to reduce the risk of rope burn, a piece of tape and a little bit of scientific knowledge. Teach your children about friction and tension in this fun practical activity. Light and sound: Total Darkness – Science Museum

It’s interesting, we did that in 2018, with the first set of equipment, which is now in the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester. And that’s what I based my budget for acquisition of the new content on. When we came to buy it again in 2022, it was quite surprising how much the prices had gone up. MC: lt’s not, and again I’m not trying to say that this is the exhibition of video games. And the reason is, is this is a hands-on gaming experience where you get to fully invest in gaming, physically. You can almost look at it like an enormous object handling gallery, because for national museums… we could never allow everyone to play with all of the objects that are national collections that need to be conserved and are one of a kind. This is really about hands-on with technology, which you rarely get to do. Launchball receives around 22,000 visits per month. The benefits of solving the issues would be that the game could be navigated via keyboard and compatible with screen reader technology.MC: My job title is Head of Commercial Experiences. I’m in charge of all the paid-for experiences that visitors get to do in the group, but it’s a personal passion of mine, that relates to gaming. Power Up existed before me, but I really have wanted to steer it in a different way and make it a bigger thing and a more Science Museum thing. But I can’t take full credit for it. There’s, there’s a whole team of people behind it. We’ve got curators and interpretation writers… The major changes focus on improvements to user experience, simplifying flows and removing server dependencies to future-proof its portability. The biggest of these changes relates to the wildly successful ‘create and share’ functionality which now allows user-designed levels to be shared via a simple link. GC: I guess the other key question, which you’ve just touched on, is what is the exhibition primary for? What are its limitations? When we were walking round you discussed how you couldn’t have anything that was too complex or time-consuming, or too violent, and that does rule out a lot of important games. Two of the world’s most important forces, light and sound have a subject all of their own. Each affects the world around your students in all sorts of ways. This fun science game from the Science Museum lets you explore the neighbourhood and look for clues to work out why all the lights have gone out. Solve the mystery of the darkness before the time runs out, learning about how the light and darkness work together. Electricity: Launchball – Science Museum When developing the game, we undertook a huge amount of research to make sure it was based on SMG’s approach towards informal science learning – what we call science capital. Science capital is all about helping people see that science is a subject beyond the classroom, part of everyday life and something everyone can be part of and do.

Venture into the dark, explore different locations and meet new characters – creating your own unique adventure as you play! On the 8- and 16-bit not being as heavily represented… obviously, we have the timeline and I think the timeline is fairly comprehensive and you won’t find many consoles that aren’t in that timeline. MC: [laughs] Certainly not. Power Up is really about being accessible for everyone and you can bring a family into that space and it’s suitable for five and over. But we do have a bimonthly adult late session, where we take over the whole museum after hours and it’s for 18s and over and they get to enjoy the museum. It’s a very sort of festival environment; we do lots of pop-ups and different things.

Cause I was very adamant that I didn’t want us to be a place where consoles come to die. They probably come for a life longer than they ever expected. [laughs] Here are some of our favourite science games for KS2 to promote knowledge, science skills and help kids reach their full potential. There’s one for every subject in the KS2 science curriculum!
