About this deal

Being a huge Wham fan I was eager to read a first hand account of how two young men, best friends growing up in grade school went on to become the pop sensation that was a part of my early teen years and still is. Wham! held its world premiere at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England for the 30th Sheffield DocFest on 17 June 2023 with a Q&A session after the screening with the film's director Chris Smith and Wham! member Andrew Ridgeley, both via video call. On 18 June it was given another DocFest preview at the Showroom Cinema’s Warner Chappell Production Music screen. [22] What is also not clear are the many years between the dissolution of Wham! and the death of George Michael. I would have liked a bridge to close the gap. But it’s the end of Wham!, failed solo album for Ridgeley, failed motor racing career and then the phone call in 2016 letting him know his best mate died. It's a joyous celebration of the Wham! years. For anyone who was a teenager in the early 1980s, it will take you on a nostalgia trip, with dozens of comically captioned photos of the band during the white espadrille years. It's an honest but affectionate account of a remarkable duo who remained true to their origins and their friendship throughout it all Daily Express

heeft respect voor Georges keuze om maar 1 afscheidsconcert (op Wembley) te geven terwijl hij veel liever een uitgebreide afscheidstournee had gedaan. During the shoot for ‘ Club Tropicana’ in Ibiza, your late Wham! bandmate George Michael came out to you as gay. In your 2020 memoir, ‘Wham! George and Me’ , you write that while Michael (who was outed in 1998) thought that revealing his sexually would have damaged the band commercially, you didn’t think at the time it would have much impact… Its rich in fact and I cant fault the information given as it builds an in depth picture into the whole Whamania years plus the before and afterIn late 1984, Michael describes how he felt attending the event to record Band Aid's " Do They Know It's Christmas?" at Sarm West Studios which would coincide with the release of their own release "Last Christmas". Showing outtakes from "Last Christmas" video shoot filmed in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. I loved wham from the age of 12, my fave was always George. And have followed George’s career since. This book also explained for me the mystery of why Wham disbanded at a time when they were riding high, not only for George Michael to pursue a solo career but because they both reached the pinnacle of Wham's success and wanted to go out on top. A thought I never knew, only knowing at the time that it left me bummed out because I never had the chance to see them perform in concert. This was also bittersweet for me because I finally did have the opportunity to see George Michael, something I desperately wanted to do because even though I never saw Wham, I could still make up for it by at least seeing George. My brother and I had planned to drive to Chicago and finally experience his beautiful, soul stirring voice, but never did get to make it there because of an illness my baby daughter had at the time, so, I missed my last chance to see him before he passed, a regret I still have today.

Screen International film critic Fionnuala Halligan wrote "The quality is far above the norm for this type of memoir assemblage, even if the substance is full of air bubbles..." [37] Ide, Wendy (25 June 2023). "Wham! review – the truth behind the mahogany tans and catchy songs". The Guardian . Retrieved 26 June 2023. It's been almost 40 years since 80s icons Wham! played their final ever gig at Wembley Stadium. Best friends George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley took the globe by storm, selling more than 30 million records worldwide in just four years. Did you know at the time that would be the last time you’d perform with George or did you always feel you’d eventually get together once more for a valedictory run-through of the hits? They didn't know it then, but they were taking their first steps towards forming Wham!, a band that was to become one of the biggest in the world.Moran, Robert (3 July 2023). "A sharp look at a pop band that parted at its peak, without resentment". The Sydney Morning Herald. Nine Entertainment Co . Retrieved 17 July 2023. Eames, Tom (29 June 2023). "Wham documentary is 'a story of friendship': Director Chris Smith reveals how he made the Netflix film". Smooth Radio . Retrieved 2 July 2023. The whole thing was pretty raucous from start to finish – and bloody good fun! It culminated in a naked steeplechase over hotel balconies with George and I wearing only moonboots! The race was abandoned because we stopped outside our director’s room who was in flagrante delicto with his wife, so that distracted us! [ Laughs] So we mooned them, and they were horrified – as well they might be!”

A new documentary on Netflix, titled Wham!, is telling their story, featuring unheard interviews and never-before-seen footage from George and Andrew's personal archives. The pair were still teenagers when Wham! began to take off in 1982, having formed the duo while at school in Bushey, Hertfordshire. Further screenings with Smith in attendance followed in June at the Paris Theater in Manhattan and July at the Bay Theater in Palisades Village, Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles. [24] [25]Why am I telling you all of this? Because I expected so much from this book, so you know it could never fulfill that expectation. Ridgeley gives the origins of his friendship with George Michael. He discusses the provenance of Wham! But it feels equal turns precious and equal turns simmering resentment.

Yeah, I saw that. Good God! Regardless of his political position, in a list of things a politician shouldn’t do, rap has got to be in the top three!” The couple enjoyed living in the countryside, with Andrew always having dreamed of living by the sea. Keren told the Daily Mail in 2009: "Our life in Cornwall is really quiet. We go to the pub and no one bothers us. Even when George [Michael] comes to visit, he isn't hassled. You can be normal if you choose to be. I have always found fame embarrassing, I still do." Halligan, Fionnuala (17 June 2023). " 'WHAM!': Sheffield Review". Screendaily . Retrieved 19 June 2023. What is the annual game that begins on December 1st (and lasts until December 24) where the object is to go as long as you can without hearing Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’?
