Bloody January is a lot more violent than Ian ranking or val mcdermid but a good story line with well defined characters. Parks’ debut novel, Bloody January, propelled him onto the international literary crime fiction circuit and won him praise, prizes, and success with readers. Niven is a biased witness – he and Parks are friends, and without his encouragement this novel probably wouldn’t exist – but that doesn’t stop him being right on this occasion.

It’s a setup that leaves scant room for law enforcement officers or for Kyle Westergaard, the 12-year-old paperboy damaged since birth by fetal alcohol syndrome, who’s walked away from the wreck with a prize all too many people would kill for. Throughout the storyline we get to find out a lot more about McCoy and he is a man with a past and indeed a man who is currently dipping his sticky fingers into a number of areas and situations that would be questionable for a police officer nowadays but remember we are set in a time where many blind eyes were turned to what was going on.
