About this deal

Alan Parks's grisly debut novel, Bloody January, is also set in Glasgow--in the first month of 1973. As more victims pile up, clues from their unseemly murders point incongruously to the highly respected Dunlops, an affluent and influential Glasgow family with deep investments in construction and factories.

The sweeping emergency decree, signed by President Mikhail Gorbachef after an emergency meeting of the Presidium of the Soviet Parliament, followed a weekend of anti-Armenian riots in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, and open armed combat elsewhere. A gritty Glasgow detective enlists the dregs of the underworld in his one-man war against an untouchably wealthy family. When Detective Harry McCoy arrives at the scene of a double shooting in the middle of a busy Glasgow street, he is sure of one thing.

Bloody January is a lot more violent than Ian ranking or val mcdermid but a good story line with well defined characters. Parks’ debut novel, Bloody January, propelled him onto the international literary crime fiction circuit and won him praise, prizes, and success with readers. Niven is a biased witness – he and Parks are friends, and without his encouragement this novel probably wouldn’t exist – but that doesn’t stop him being right on this occasion.

It’s a setup that leaves scant room for law enforcement officers or for Kyle Westergaard, the 12-year-old paperboy damaged since birth by fetal alcohol syndrome, who’s walked away from the wreck with a prize all too many people would kill for. Throughout the storyline we get to find out a lot more about McCoy and he is a man with a past and indeed a man who is currently dipping his sticky fingers into a number of areas and situations that would be questionable for a police officer nowadays but remember we are set in a time where many blind eyes were turned to what was going on. In connection with a dramatic escalation of the situation in the city of Baku, attempts of criminal extremist forces to remove from power by organizing mass unrest legally acting state authorities and in the interests of the protection and security of citizens, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, guided by point 14 of the article 119 of the Constitution of the USSR, decrees: To declare since 20 January 1990 state of emergency in the city of Baku, by extending to its territory the effect of the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from 15 January 1990.Las piezas del puzzle le van surgiendo entre cerveza y cerveza sin que él aporte mucho más que su impertinencia y mal gusto. Detective Harry McCoy has been tasked with solving the brutal murder of a young girl shot dead in Glasgow, they know the who but have no idea of the why.

It's January 1973, it's snowing, it's freezing cold, but it's not going to keep this particular killer from increasing the body count. I seem to be saying this a lot just recently, but for fear of repeating myself, I have to say what an excellent debut novel this is! With his new partner in tow, McCoy uses his underworld network to lead the investigation but soon runs up against a secret society led by Glasgow's wealthiest family, the Dunlops. They acted pursuant to a state of emergency, which continued for more than four months afterward, declared by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, signed by Chairman Mikhail Gorbachev. With a newbie partner in tow, McCoy uses his underworld network to build a picture of a secret society run by Glasgow’s wealthiest family, the Dunlops. It tried to initially assess the 20 January events and adopted some documents condemning the crackdown operation by the Soviet army.

For another, the job she turns out to have been hired for—leading an investigation her new boss doesn’t feel he can entrust to his own force—makes her queasy. The decree contravened legal acts in force at the time, which provided that the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the AzSSR would have to turn to the central government with the relevant plea. Detective Harry McCoy is convinced it wasn't a random act of violence, and he guessed correctly, so, with his new partner Wattie, he begins an investigation that will take him from the brothels in the less salubrious areas of this city to a secret society run by one of the wealthiest families in Glasgow. From the outset I was heartily entertained by the exploits of Detective Harry McCoy, with his nefarious relationships and more hands-on methods, and his wet-behind-the-ears sidekick, Wattie as we find ourselves firmly rooted in 1970’s Glasgow. The trials and tribulations of Detective Harry McCoy and the various characters in the Glasgow underworld that he has to deal with. Prostitutas, yonquis, antros, pubs de mala muerte, depravados sexuales, corrupción, etc y un Glasgow decepcionante. But when an eighteen-year-old boy shoots a young woman dead in broad daylight and then commits suicide, Det. He noted how the "Popular Front" declared its own state of emergency in Baku before the action was taken and how Soviet state organs "ceased to control the situation.
