About this deal

Parameter R {\displaystyle R} is a scaling parameter and does not affect the structure of the Spirograph. Different values of R {\displaystyle R} would yield similar Spirograph drawings. Depending on the relative circle sizes and the pen-hole distance, you’ll get various different types of shape – some closer to the pointy hypocycloid, and some closer to a circle; when the hole is near to, but not on the edge, the pointy ends become thin loops; when the hole is close to, but not at the centre, it’s like drawing a circle but slightly missing where you started, so you get something fairly smooth but that wiggles in and out from the centre gently. Spirograph drawings from the outside hole to the middle hole, on the same size cog Spirographs inspire creativity. Use colored pens and pencils to bring color and an extra level of depth to your creations. Some sets are sold with colored markers for this very purpose, but you can also use any marker that fits in the wheel holes. The Travel Spirograph is a smaller, handheld Spirograph where all the bits and pieces are contained within the shell of the Spirograph itself. This Spirograph opens up, revealing two further compartments. The topmost compartment (more like a tray) is where the paper sits, and the one underneath that is for the spare gears. The ring is built into the top layer, which is nice. And when you run out of the supplied paper – Post It notes work well as a substitute. Scratch & Shimmer Spirograph set Now, we move on to the 20th century and the first hand-cranked Spirographs. The earliest versions of a Spirograph design were created in the late 19th century. However, it wasn’t until the early 20th century that the Spirograph design saw mainstream success.

The Spirograph deluxe comes with a whopping 45 pieces, including 19 wheels and two rings. If you can afford it, it’s definitely worth considering getting the deluxe version over the original, just for the sheer quantity of wheels – as it opens up a lot more options for your artwork. Shaped wheels: Shaped wheels come in a wide variety of shapes, including bar, quad, triangle, and oval. Like the round wheels, shaped versions also have multiple holes to vary the design. Creative and colourful. Sturdy and good price Bought for my grandchildren aged 4 and they loved it. Drawing toys based on gears have been around since at least 1908, when The Marvelous Wondergraph was advertised in the Sears catalog. [4] [5] An article describing how to make a Wondergraph drawing machine appeared in the Boys Mechanic publication in 1913. [6]

This would result in a spirograph drawing that was just a single circle, centred at the centre of the big hole. The radius of this circle would be the radius of the big hole minus the radius of the cog, as the pen-hole stays a fixed distance away from the outside edge of the big hole. x ( t ) = R [ ( 1 − k ) cos ⁡ t + l k cos ⁡ 1 − k k t ] , y ( t ) = R [ ( 1 − k ) sin ⁡ t − l k sin ⁡ 1 − k k t ] . {\displaystyle {\begin{aligned}x(t)&=R\left[(1-k)\cos t+lk\cos {\frac {1-k}{k}}t\right],\\y(t)&=R\left[(1-k)\sin t-lk\sin {\frac {1-k}{k}}t\right].\\\end{aligned}}}After a little more thought, it becomes apparent that the last of these is irrelevant – if you start with the small circle elsewhere in the big circle, and keep everything else the same, you’ll end up with the same design – possibly rotated around to a different angle; the main effect of moving where the small circle starts is to change how far through the motion you are when you start, and since the line joins up to itself, you can start from anywhere and draw the whole thing.

It sits somewhere on the continuum between an artistic drawing tool and a neat mathematical gadget.Wheels create the magic. Toothed edges and strategically placed holes provide multiple design options with each wheel. Spirograph sets come with anywhere from six to 25 wheels with the following options. Keep your pen as vertical as possible when drawing, as this will help the gears to move around the ring as smoothly as possible. Fisher developed various drawing machines from Meccano pieces, eventually producing a prototype Spirograph . Patented in 16 countries, it went on sale in Schofields department store in Leeds in 1965. A year later, Fisher licensed Spirograph to Kenner Products in the United States . In 1967 Spirograph was chosen as the UK Toy of the Year. As with many inventions, it’s hard to pinpoint who exactly came up with the idea for a Spirograph, but we can look to a few different people as potential inventors. The first person we can look at is Johann Samuel Eberhardt, a Swiss mathematician who published a paper in 1843 titled “New and Useful Design for a Drawing Instrument.” Now, the device in Eberhardt’s paper didn’t look anything like a Spirograph, but he was the first person to ever imagine a design for a drawing device that used a “worm” to create line patterns. The second person we can look to is Henry Philpotts, an Englishman who patented a device in 1846 that used a similar design to Eberhardt’s.

A Spirograph is a geometric drawing toy that originates from the Victorian era. Mathematician Bruno Abdank-Abakanowicz first invented the Spirograph sometime between 1881 and 1900, as a way of drawing spirals. But the Spirograph that we know and love today, was developed by engineer Denys Fisher in the mid-sixties, and was advertised as a way to draw “a million marvellous patterns”. Which, given the number of combinations possible, isn’t far from the truth! How does a Spirograph work?

Linderman, Jim. "ArtSlant - Spirograph? No, MAGIC PATTERN!". artslant.com . Retrieved 17 July 2011. The definitive Spirograph toy was developed by the British engineer Denys Fisher between 1962 and 1964 by creating drawing machines with Meccano pieces. Fisher exhibited his spirograph at the 1965 Nuremberg International Toy Fair. It was subsequently produced by his company. US distribution rights were acquired by Kenner, Inc., which introduced it to the United States market in 1966 and promoted it as a creative children's toy. Kenner later introduced Spirotot, Magnetic Spirograph, Spiroman, and various refill sets. [7] Very interesting and informative! Thanks for your simple explanations and clear illustrations.
