Adore a book with loveable characters (Project Hail Mary, Remarkably Bright Creatures), and here’s another book that ticked that box. One of the things I really enjoy about this author is the multiple interesting and complex magical systems created for each story arc. I devoured this book in one sitting - and while I wish I could have taken the time to enjoy it even more, nothing can take away the enjoyment I had with this story. The majority of the books reviewed at this site have been provided for free by publishers, authors, or other third parties like NetGalley or Edelweiss.

There are twists and turns, some of which are expected, but they all lead to a lovely ending after a suitably thrilling climax. This book ended up on my list of favorite books I’ve read in 2022, and it's near the very top of that list. since star mother, though, the writing feels contrived and shallow and the books drawn-out longer than they need to be, with repetitive inner monologues taking the place character development. This is only until he realises that his new house has locked him in and has no intention of ever letting him out. Some will not bother to look beyond the cover; others will find the entire tome utterly captivating. I enjoyed discovering how everything functioned and observing how the magic impacted every other aspect of the narrative.

However, they both soon realise that their residence has far more secrets than they initially assumed, and the dangers to them might not come from the house alone. We don't get too much back story to the characters until the latter part of the novel and so end up with strangers watching them react to things. Nearly took a star off for the lack-of-communication/misunderstanding between main characters which is a romance format that always irritates me. This was the perfect story to wrap up the spooky season, and I especially loved the audiobook narration as well. Prepared as she is with augury, a set of magic tools, and a new staff trained in the uncanny, Hulda's work still proves unexpectedly difficult. This is an alternate-world novel, where magical families and houses are accepted and certain groups have been created to preserve those lineages and hopefully grow the magical abilities that are slowly dying out. As the author explores two completely dissimilar people in two utterly dissimilar places, the writing may initially seem a little muddled and disconnected.

One of the best reads of this year, so happy there will be more stories of this fantastic gang, Heir of Uncertain Magic. In a Nutshell: All things bright and beautiful, some creatures great and small, many things wise and wonderful – the author included them all. With its doors slamming shut and locking behind him, Whimbrel House is not about to let Merritt leave. But never fear, thirty four year old Hulda Larkin, of the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms (BIKES), arrives to save Merritt from his enchanted house. Unbeknownst to Merritt, Hulda Larkin, a valuable employee of the ‘Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms’ (BIKER! The magical world she is building is really interesting and I appreciate the fact she’s trying to include a clean romance aspect too, bc we probably don’t have enough of those, and mixed with magic — I think that’s cool, perhaps a bit unique.

While most meanings are guessable if you know their meanings in English, it's worth going through the list as they come up regularly in the plot. Psst… I realise I have three separate bullet points just for the characters, but trust me – they have earned their spots on this list. Love it when a prologue is utilised well rather than simply leaking a scene from further in the book. Luckily, before the end of the book I realized there must be a part 2 in the works so I checked and I was able to download the digital ARC of part 2 from NetGalley. And despite a seemingly vast world, she insists on telling stories that are very similar at their core.

Not so scary that older kids couldn't handle it (and to be honest, they would probably handle it better than I did. She is a tamer of possessed and enchanted houses and sees it as her duty to preserve the disappearing magic in such ancient houses.
