About this deal

Use a varnish on top of the emulsion. To further enhance the durability of the emulsion, you may want to consider using a varnish on top, which will act as a sealer. Binder: Unlike paint this is a very small part of a stain, but is it still present. It helps to hold the pigment in the wood once the vehicle has carried it there

There are plenty of varnishes available that won’t yellow and leave your wood with a rich, glossy finish.

This depends very much on what type of wood you are painting and where. For most interior jobs such as painting windows you will need an undercoat and a top coat, which is typically a toss up between satin vs gloss. Apply 2-3 varnish coats over paint with a paint sprayer or roller. Wait until one coat dries before applying the next one. Water-based varnish takes around 6 hours to dry between coats, while oil-based varnish takes around 24 hours. First there’s Shellac varnish, something we’re asked about frequently. But what exactly isShellac? It’s actually a natural resin secreted by an insect called a lac beetle, which lives in Indian and Thai forests. The substance comes exclusively from the female insect and is scraped off the tree branches, processed into dry flakes then mixed with ethanol to create a liquid. The end product has lots of interesting functions; it is used as a food glaze and colouring as well as a wood varnish. At the same time, you should remove any fixings (like handles) which will get in the way of your paint. If you don’t want to use a sealant, apply very thin coats of varnish to help build up layers and protect the wood. Sand in between each layer and wipe away the dust and repeat this until you’re satisfied with the colour and coverage. Can you varnish over chalk paint?

Ideally a spray application of a number of thin coats will be best, however I appreciate that this is not perhaps a viable option and brush application will be fine, with a sand between coats with a 240 grit paper. Wipe off the sanding dust and apply further coats until you have the desired finish. I would expect 3- 4 coats for you project, however two will be a sufficient minimum. A low-gloss or satin finish is more suitable for retaining the older look of the paint, or for more of an antique finish. Apply the Varnish Remember any product designed to permanently stain wood will have no trouble doing the same to your skin and fingers. The solvent will not be pleasant on your skin either so we recommend that you take care using stains, and definitely use rubber gloves and overalls.Chalk paint is largely used for painting furniture because of its coverage and matt finish. You don’t necessarily have to seal or finish chalk paint; if you use good quality paint it will include a top coat and stand up to wear and tear.
