Little Simz has released her brand new album ‘NO THANK YOU’ today (December 12) – listen to it in full below. The wax comes clean and was static free upon first play, but I would recommend swapping the cardboard sleeves to anti-static sleeves. My only gripe is that they delivered such a cool sleeve with the envelope design, only for the inside to be completely blank and both inner sleeves are identical - that’s just some wishful thinking on my part though. The brilliance of No Thank You is how Simz uses her brazenly unapologetic narrative to spin out larger points about institutional and generational racism, the danger of business practices indifferent to their human impact, and links all of that to contemporary mental health crises. A "reflective" track with " electronic coos," the song pays tribute to Simz's late childhood friend Harry Uzoka, a famous model who was killed in a stabbing in January 2018, and also examines Simz's fame, music industry complications, and personal endurance.

Most of the tracks conclude with lengthy instrumental codas, where Simz effectively cedes centre-stage to Inflo’s lushly inventive arrangements, which, with their swirls of choral vocals and swelling strings, nod to the oft-sampled work of both David Axelrod and Charles Stepney without ever seeming like straightforward homage. And of course Simz rapping with powerful lyrics about discrimination and both black and female empowerment. The album feels far more like a direct collaboration than a producer simply coming up with beats for an artist to rap over. Whatever their foundation in her own life, the subjects weave their way through most of No Thank You.Tracks like X and Control give me goosebumps, with moving instrumentals and beautifully delivered bars. On 15 December 2022, Simz shared a teaser of a No Thank You film on her Instagram account, announcing its release for the follow day. The production here is lush yet airy, with the beats feeling light and bouncy in a way I just can't describe.The albums of the year 2022: our critic's choice from Kendrick Lamar and Little Simz to Weyes Blood and Gwenno". On the minimalist album opener, "Angel", Simz analyses her rise to stardom with a " Prince-style pun" on master ownership. Recorded with her regular collaborator Inflo, this is Simz at her most free, daring and spontaneous. I’m gonna give it a cleaning but wow this pressing is so muddy and distorted it makes me want to stream the album instead.
