About this deal

Inseparable are the natural elements of Barbados and Mount Gay Rum. Since day one, the water, cane and airborne yeast have combined to create our rums. They have four pots of two similar types, so definitely can produce different marques, but I strongly suspect the Barbados culture works against them for that – Barbados likes low ABV blended rum and traditional production has accommodated that. At Mt Gay they focus on consistency for export, and they also significantly reduce prior to ageing which will limit their ability to make higher ABV releases for a long time, though they do age the pot and column marques separately so can do pure still releases as the origin series showed. Flavour: Slightly sweet and smoky. It is very mild and does not burn on the palate at all. I could detect vanilla, spices (cloves, nutmeg), coconut, butterscotch, cocoa and a slight woodiness. Summary: This is a really excellent and smooth rum. It's kind of a smoother and more complex version of the Mount Gay XO rum. I'm not entirely sure the price difference between the two versions is entirely relevant, though. Nevertheless the Master Select is certainly better than the XO. I take half a point off for its current price. It’s all very nice and polite and very nicely balanced. But its just not overly exciting. I think at this price point we need more from Mount Gay. They need to get out of that comfort zone. A re-brand is all very nice but they must be looking at Foursquare. St Lucia Distillers, Worthy Park and even Plantation and thinking – we must spice things up. We need to change, innovate, maybe try some different finishes – up the ABV (this is 43%) and just offer something more exciting and more 2018.

The 18th century was a time of oceanic exploration, discovery and pirateering. Many told stories of reaching the islands of the Caribbean. Of blinding white sands and waters of emerald and sapphire. On the nose: Light fruity and floral scents that make me think of peaches, coconuts, golden kiwi and apples. Midway through, the ethanol becomes more pronounced and contends with the other scents. Chewy molasses, rich butterscotch, fragrant toffee, a light touch of vanilla and cocoa - this rum has it all. I read an interview with RL Seale, (the Foursquare guy), who said that most rum drinkers think they like sweet rum but what they really like is sweetened rum. No doubt he'd add that if drinkers gave a pure, un-sugared rum like this one (and his own superb Foursquare rums) a chance they'd appreciate the immense pleasure from all that they have to offer. They are naturally sweet, and so much more. Mt Gay I expect to do some really interesting things in the near future because they have just rebuilt and installed a classic Savalle column in their batch production area which gives them some flexibility for blending. They are also doing a lot more cane management so I expect some juice distillates to come onstream in the next few years. She joined the Mount Gay team in 2014 as the Quality Assurance Manager and followed the same path as Allen Smith within the distillery—and she continues to be inspired by his legacy at Mount Gay. Trudiann now shares the expertise and secrets of Mount Gay’s rums. Her capacity to understand the subtle balance between scientific precision and the instinct necessary for the production of rum is one of her greatest strengths. It is very close. These are both very, very similar, but I think maybe I could tell them apart as this one was ever so slightly sweeter (but just barely). Otherwise, they are both about the same to me. On the nose: Immediately very pleasant scents of coconuts, apricots, marzipan and banana syrup emerge. The banana syrup and marzipan are the most pronounced, yet they’re gentle scents. Behind those two are undertones of vanilla, cinnamon, honey, pineapple syrup, oolong tea and canned peaches. The coconut notes are particularly good. Its not very spicy. There is interaction with the wood but it doesn’t seem to have developed beyond a little buttery spiciness. This is a light and sweet bajan style of rum which has a wonderful balance to it. In the mouth: A very interesting texture for the low ABV. It has a certain viscosity that outclasses most 40% to 43% ABV Scotch I’ve come across. On the nose, for example, I get coconuts, apricots, marzipan banana syrup and pineapple syrup. It’s a bit more peppery compared to the Eclipse, but the ethanol doesn’t blanket the other flavors. I still get undertones of vanilla, cinnamon, honey and canned peaches after the more pronounced syrup tastes, but these are not so strong, and the tastes are pleasantly stretched out. Score: 5/10

Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend : The Whisky Exchange Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend : The Whisky Exchange

Drinks: Please don’t . Best enjoyed on it’s own. A drier alternative to many other anejo rums out there (particularly the Venezuelan or Guatemalan). I sipped MG Master Select next to R. L. Seale's 10 yo. Both represent what's best in rum, BUT - Seale's twice cheaper (at least in my place). So, one point down; Taste: Spicy, paradoxically sweetish and drying entry, some citrus, dried fruits and flower notes, persimmons, cinnamon, sandalwood notes, medium-to-heavy bodied. Lovely oak pepper and vanilla notes intermixed ginger, leather and tobacco. Nice drying finish to it. Finish is long with a spicy dry tingling to the lips. And could you please elaborate on your comment about the odd design of the WIRD pot stills? It is very hard to find pictures online and what I find never shows a complete still. Golden brown in colour. The nose is full of chewy toffee, banana, caramel, brown sugar and that signature coconut. In some places, time doesn’t exist. Only fellowship. And the flavour of Mount Gay Rum. These are Bajan rum shops. Springing up as if almost strategically placed across the island of Barbados. ABV rum from Barbados. This is the top rum from one of the oldest distilleries in the world, Mount Gay (outside of their specials). A blend of rums aged 10-30 years in American oak barrels. It is said that 55 different casks were used for the blend. My version is from 2018. I agree that wood and maturation are a very important aspect, but personally I am not that excited about different casks. I wish it would be more about the distillate itself. As good as all the releases by Foursquare are, I think they play I did not know anything about a Savalle column at Mount Gay, thank you very much for sharing this. Since I could not find anything about it online, may I ask you where this information comes from? Many of these stories weren’t believed, unless said adventurers returned with bottles or casks of Caribbean rum - bona fide proof of a sailor’s journey.

Some of the blend is double distilled in copper pot stills and other parts distilled in a copper Coffey column still (a Coffey still is usually used for Irish whiskey) – then aged in ex bourbon oak casks for various periods of time then blended to profile. This is the oldest (but newest edition to their line) of the Mt Gay line the youngest being Mount Gay Eclipse Silver, an older sibling of the Mount Gay Eclipse , and the former oldest Mount Gay Extra Old.Appearance: Lovely red / gold, or patinated bronze. Sparkling clear with no hazing separation or floating sediments. Crenellated edges develop on swirling with long legs developing very slowly. Notes: Named after the year the distillery was founded (1703). This is Mount Gays premium rum. A blend of minimum 10 year old to 30 year old rums blended to show off their best product. Fermented in oak vats (many distilleries now use stainless steel) using using water filtered through the islands coral geology (limestone aquifer) from of an almost 250 ft deep well. Sipped the sweetness is dialled down a little. There is a nice spicy entry which is quite woody – ginger and a little hint towards a charred barrel and a little fire to the sweeter brown sugar and toffee notes.
