About this deal

Things take a turn for the worse when Grandad gets kidnapped by gnoblins (no, that is not spelt incorrectly) forcing Frankie to embark on a rescue mission across a magical realm filled with strange creatures, dangerous enemies and - worst of all - absolutely no WiFi. It is an effective device that adds humour and occasional respite from a thrilling pace but, at times, it feels unnecessary and somewhat undermines the story – which is genuinely tense and dramatic. The content and ambition of the show remains the same: to give every pupil the opportunity to engage with authors and illustrators in their own classroom using the power of the internet. Even if readers hate quests as much as Frankie does, they will find the page-turning excitement on offer very hard to resist.

Answering all the important questions you never knew you had, like where fairytale characters go to the toilet, this book offers plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Instead, they have to stay with their grandad and Frankie is dreading it as they don’t know him very well. However, please be aware that it uses a YouTube player and that you should check your school’s permissions to ensure that YouTube isn’t blocked. Frankie and her nerdy younger brother, Joel, normally go and stay at their Aunty’s when their mum and dad go away but this time she’s in hospital. Lots of fun lines but a few too many 'aha' plot moments and too many characters (always in groups of five). When their Granda is kidnapped by gnoblins they have to enter a magical realm to get him back embarking on a magical, dangerous and unbelievable tale like the games their parents created. Before they know it, Frankie and Joel find themselves embarking on a quest (it’s not a quest, Frankie hates quests) to rescue their grandad. Kenneth Anderson’s illustrations bring Frankie’s quest to life through the journal pages interspersed within the story and I loved the detailed map of Parallelia at the start of the book.

Whilst trying to find a mobile phone signal, Frankie finds her way into the attic and stumbles across some old maps and books. Puffin is an imprint of Penguin Random House, the world’s number-one publisher representing a vibrant community of publishing houses marked by unparalleled success.Frankie used to think it was cool too, until she started secondary school and it somehow became not cool any more. Things get worse for Frankie as soon as they arrive and she realises there’s no phone signal and grandad has no wi-fi!
