About this deal

Despite all the healthy ingredients, one should bear in mind that plant-based spreads and dips – like animal-based versions – can be very high in fat and salt, so they should be used sparingly. Jams and chocolate spreads should also be enjoyed in moderation as they usually contain considerable amounts of sugar. We figured you would know that already, so this article is focussed instead on the vegan alternatives to butter. We’ll also include vegan margarine options (as we discuss in our Is Margarine Vegan? article, some is vegan but plenty isn’t). Once we’ve run through the best vegan butter and margarine options available in the UK, we’ll also explain how you can make your own vegan butter, in case the fancy takes you. What Is Vegan Butter Made From?

Well, if you’re vegan, then you’re not consuming a product that’s originated from animals because, as we all know, vegan diets are plant-based. Vegans do not eat any food that comes from animals or has been produced by animals. You can even have a go at making it into some hemp ‘butter’ to spread on toast, oatcakes and rice cakes. Tofu is a great meat substitute; you only have to look at Asian cuisine to see how versatile it is. When it comes to vegan spreads, e.g. your vegetable, coconut, sunflower, olive, avocado or almond oil-based spreads, most of them are fortified with vitamins. Not quite as buttery as Flora Buttery (which now contains buttermilk), the Flora Pro Activ Buttery spread is nonetheless tasty enough. Add to that the fact that (according to Flora) it is ‘clinically proven by over 50 studies to actively lower cholesterol’ and you could be onto a real winner here if health is a particular concern of yours. Made with fermented almond milk blended with extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil, along with fermentation cultures, this is a richer vegan butter alternative than most here and could be viewed as more of an acquired taste. But if you’re looking for something that is a little different from most margarines, it could be worth a try.

Pâtés are usually made with meat or fish, but plant-based pâtés are a great alternative. Plant-based fats and nutritional yeast often form the main ingredients of veggie pâtés and are usually accompanied by vegetables and herbs. Nutritional yeast is popular because it contains glutamic acid, which lends a rich flavour to the spread, as well as adding folate, B vitamins, and small amounts of complete protein. 2 6. Vegan spreads with a Mediterranean touch: pestos Nut butters are made from cashew nuts, peanuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, and/or sesame seeds. Nut butter is usually made exclusively from blended nuts. Some products, however, include sea salt, sugar, palm fat, or even dairy products, warranting a look at the ingredient list. Nut butters are an ideal source of plant-based fat. Furthermore, they contain valuable vitamin E, folate, protein, potassium, magnesium, and zinc. 1 Nut butters can also be made at home since all it takes is pureeing the nuts in a powerful mixer. Some oil can be added for a particularly creamy result. Adding cocoa (and a sweetening agent if desired) will produce vegan chocolate cream. 4. Vegan spreads based on oil and legumes Clearly, this will come down to personal taste, but here are the five vegan-friendly margarines that we are more than happy to spread on our toast and home-baked bread. What makes vegan spreads vegan?

Interestingly, some studies indicate that the type of fats found in hemp seeds may help reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, menopause, and certain skin conditions ( 55, 56, 57). They use butter or margarine, but not just any old butter or margarine – vegan butter or margarine. The vegan butter alternatives are made from plant-based milk and have a similar texture and taste to dairy butter. But they’re not made from cow’s milk or sheep, goat, yak or buffalo milk. 2 Your diet does not have to be limited – in fact, you may find yourself eating a higher variety of foods as a vegan Edamame are immature soybeans with a sweet and slightly grassy taste. They need to be steamed or boiled before you eat them. Then, they can be enjoyed on their own or added to soups, salads, sushi, wraps, stir-fries, or rice rolls. Sprouting grains and legumes increases the number of healthy nutrients they contain and reduces their content of antinutrients, which are compounds that can affect your body’s absorption of certain vitamins and minerals ( 71, 72).

Almost every food brand has their own version of spread, often chocolate spread and often loaded with a lot of processed sugar and unhealthy fats. While these spreads definitely score in the taste and consistency category, they are not suited for a balanced or conscious diet and lifestyle – even less for someone with high athletic goals.
