About this deal

Toby was lucky enough to see incredible places and even though you can *feel* what it was like to be on the kayak, it also feels like you're kayaking in a void.

Toby's outrageously fearless spirit and good humour will not fail to uplift and spur you on to pursue your own adventures. An incredible read of adventure and life that will draw you in and inspire you to pursue your own journeys. Not a book I would have picked, I was gifted this and felt that I should read it - I am so very glad that I did. From the wildness and peace of the sea, looking back at the land, Toby hoped to gain the strength and balance he knew nature could provide and to discover what anchors us to each other.Right away you get an idea of what sort of person Toby was, calmly dealing with bureaucracy, meeting strangers and instantly making new friends, Toby had that rare ability to find the most generous people just when he needed it.

But the goal of kayaking all areas was unfilled due to his untimely death at the age of 40 from cancer. This incredibly moving story weaves together one family's story and shows the sense of hope and love that can be found through adventure even when things don't go according to plan. A beautiful, poignant but ultimately uplifting reminder to us that life is an adventure and we need to snatch every minute before it's gone. A lovely read and the language and way it is written was a pleasure to read - given the first three chapters were Toby’s and then it was continued by his sister - she really did him proud and an amazing job - as the reader you wouldn’t know it had switched and I felt I was fully with Toby until the last chapters. To fund for the adventure Toby applied to the Winston Churchill memorial trust and all background and reasons were shared with the reader as the application form was filled out…genius.I enjoyed looking at the maps at the start of the book and they helped me make sense of things throughout the story. The trip is done in stages over a few years, the longest section was the coast of France and Spain and it is near the end of this section that there is a shift in Toby’s mood, whether it was realising he was having to go back to real life or when he realised he hadn’t thought of his brother for a few days or maybe it wasn’t Toby but this reader sensing the end of the book but it was like some of the colour had drained out of the world. Toby's story of seizing life's opportunities despite obstacles should inspire all of us to not let life pass us by.

To take on the difficult task of turning reams of notes, audio recordings etc into a cogent book is admirable. On a journey that took him to stormiest and most tranquil stretches of our seas, he found stories behind the familiar names and imagined environments of the well-loved BBC broadcast. Moderate Becoming Good Later is the remarkable story of two remarkable people, Toby Karr and his sister Katie.Informative, humorous and emotional, it left me feeling sad but also really inspired and motivated to tackle my own adventure, what ever the size! The book itself has humour and sadness too in it but overall people would enjoy the journey through the pages. Sounds like he had an amazing ability to connect with people where ever he was and bring them into his challenge.
