About this deal

Club Tropicana: Arguably the best song on this album. The production has a calypso inspired beat and light, summery feel. The lyrics are all about summer and having fun on vacation, and George gives a vocal performance that actually resembles himself. The music video is also cute and fun. I like this song.

The second single but the first hit. It reached no.3 in late 1982. Again, it’s the 12″ version on The Final Wham Rap: Yeah…he ain’t no Biggie. He raps the verses and his rapping is…something. To be fair he can actually spit a couple bars but it’s just like…why? He raps pretentious verses about how he doesn’t want to work and lives life to the fullest. “Hey jerk, you work! This boy’s got better things to do.” “A1 style from head to toe, cool cat fashion Ima let you know, I’m a soul boy, I’m a dough boy, takes pleasure in living I believe in joy.” The chorus is sung and it’s even cheesier - “Wham! Bam! I am, a man! Job or no job, you can tell me that I’m not. Do you enjoy what you do? If not, just stop don’t stay there and rot!” The bridge is just cringe - “Now reach up high and touch your soul, the boys from Wham will help you reach that goal.” The song also goes on for 6 AND A HALF MINUTES because there is an instrumental break and then just repeating everything already said. The only truly good thing is the funk-inspired production, which is probably the best production on this entire album.

[ permanent dead link] The final single predictably hit no.1 in the UK charts. It managed to keep the effervescence of earlier Wham! releases and was actually a really strong single to end on, even if it did feature a somewhat unnecessary guitar solo, that may or may not have been played by Andrew Ridgely. Club Tropicana, the most successful song on this album, is probably also the musically best song on this album with it being a parody to all-inclusive resorts that British 18-19yr olds would go on as a lads holiday out in Spain or Greece. Its a fun premise that many clearly have missed with it also being catchy. Davis, S. (2012). 80s Chart-Toppers: Every Chart-Topper Tells a Story. Mainstream Publishing. p.264. A double A-side with Everything She Wants, Last Christmas topped a ludicrously successful 1984 for Wham!, and George Michael in particular. Only kept off the UK no.1 spot by the Band Aid, Do They Know It’s Christmas? charity single, it sold over a million copies and is apparently the highest selling single in UK history not to get to the number one spot. The 12″“Pudding Mix” was for years the de facto standard version of the song, appearing on The Best of Wham! in 1997 as well as The Final. In fact it wasn’t until 2006 that the standard 7″ mix appeared on a Wham! /George Michael CD (his Twenty Five greatest hits album). A Ray of Sunshine: The songwriting here is bad, it sounds like a Madlibs word entry. It makes no sense, I think it’s a love song with dance themes but there’s also lyrics about money. The chorus is “sometimes you wake up in the morning with a bassline, a Ray of sunshine. Sometimes you know you’re gonna have a good time and your ready to go.” Yeah. Also the vocals are not very impressive either (especially for a dude like him). The one good thing is the production which is slightly more sophisticated than the other songs. A Motown-inspired song with nice bass, guitar, and percussion work. Nothing Looks the Same in the Light: A sensual ballad about lust and falling in love. George delivers the song with a gentle, seductive vocal similar to on “Father Figure.” This song is one of the best written on the album. The song is ruined by the bad production which features a bassline blander than white bread and cheap, sugary synths. This could actually have been a good song if it had better production.

Is the idea of George and Andrew being bad boy rebels against society possibly one of the most laughable things in human history? Yes. While overall, George and Wham have made better songs and albums. I would argue that this is one of the most fun. I am glad however that they decided to drop that whole rebellious, bad boy theme for Make It Big which is the better Wham album in my opinion. Love Machine: Cover of a Motown classic, though it’s kind of out of place here. The production is a bit watered down but George does a faithful vocal performance. The live in China 1985 version is much better. Not a hit in June 1982 when first released, but was subsequently re-released in January 1983 (after Young Guns (Go For It!)) when it reached no.8 in the charts. Wham Rap! was rather political in a very simplistic way. The message was clear, working is for jerks. If you don’t enjoy what you do just stop “Cos the benefit gang are going to pay”. In addition, the Wham Rap while being far from innovative in the world or rap music, it is still a cheery listen with a fun music video alongside it. It consists of Andrew being trapped at his parents house and leads to everyone's favourite edgy teen George Michael to sort him out and tell him to not take life so seriously. Archived copy". Comprised of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, Wham! defined the pop music landscape of the era with their blend of pop, dance, and soul. Another new song, this time a solid cover of the Was (Not Was) song. It again formed part of the final E.P. although it was released separately later in 1986. Another remix which replaced the standard 7″ mix on all the compilations. It’s easy to see why, since it’s far superior to the standard version which a whole extra verse at the end. George Michael has been quoted as saying that this was his favourite song from the Wham! era.

Oricon Album Chart Book: Complete Edition 1970–2005. Roppongi, Tokyo: Oricon Entertainment. 2006. ISBN 4-87131-077-9. In the US, the album was originally released as the group "WHAM! U.K.", due to a conflict with a US group with the same name (Columbia BFC-38911). A third number one in a row from Make It Big, Freedom was Wham! at the peak of their powers. There was a “Long Mix” 12″ version but the on The Final it is the standard mix albeit with a unique ‘outro’ when a trumpet comes in.
