About this deal

The best carrier for forward-facing… Ergobaby Omni 360, Ergobaby All Position 360, Lillebaby Complete. The Beco 8, Beco Gemini, and Babybjorn Carrier One all also forward-face, but we don’t love baby’s position in these carriers compared to the ergonomic positioning in Ergobaby and Lillebaby carriers. If you prefer to feed with your baby in a more horizontal position, you might want to use a ring sling or stretchy wrap. If you want an ultra-lightweight, just-in-case carrier for when little legs get tired, you won’t get more compact and great value than the Izmi Toddler Carrier, perfect from around 9 months to 3 years.

Skip the infant insert: Ideally we wanted a carrier that did not require an infant insert (imagine a puffy mini duvet or a small pillow). Losing that piece makes a carrier both easier and less hot to use. Newer carrier models reduce the need for inserts with adjustable seat widths and panel heights that create a close, supportive fit whether the child is a newborn or a toddler.

The straps for the inner-harness design make this carrier more complex and get in the way if you want to breastfeed. Founder Karin Frost says part of Ergobaby’s mission is to make a “thoughtful” baby carrier — the Omni 360 has some great features that demonstrate that philosophy. If you find that a blanket is too difficult to keep in place when you’re carrying a smaller newborn, Lillebaby also sells a pillow insert that will help you get the perfect position. Our babywearing coaches say they always recommend buying the insert for a newborn, since they’ve seen too much confusion about what blanket to use. This is an updated version of the Complete, with a few modifications. First, it has the zip-open panel in front that allows for more ventilation. This is a thoughtful addition; in every other case we saw, a completely different carrier is necessary if you want mesh for hiking on a long summer day.

If you’ve ever found some baby carriers hard to do up by yourself, these two are good options for you as there are a number of different ways to configure the shoulder straps. The Gemini is not the only option in Beco’s line of carriers. If you find yourself confused by the alternatives, use this as your cheat-sheet: Petite mums often come to me for advice because the carrier they’re using feels too big, bulky or cumbersome. After speaking with these experts, I narrowed the list down to eight carriers to test. When the carriers arrived, I pulled each out of its box to do an initial test. At a basic level, I needed to make sure the carriers were easy to put on and tighten on my own. Once I’d confirmed this ease (which was present in some carriers but not others), I wore my 6-month-old, 13-pound daughter around the house in the carriers. Because of her age, I used all the carriers in a front-carry configuration, but I tested them with her facing both in and out. Each carrier also came with me for a 2-mile (minimum) hike, and I toted my baby around in them during Christmas tree lightings, brewery hangouts with friends and fussy family meals. Stretchy baby wraps are perfect for newborns and premature babies. Incredibly supportive and dreamily soft, all of these baby wraps are one-size-fits-all and perfect for mums and dads. Simply tie the baby wrap around your body and pop your baby in and out as needed.

Lillebaby Essentials: Similar to the Ergobaby Original in look and function, and we don’t prefer it for similar reasons. It is marketed as being a “4-in-1 carrier,” but it doesn't accommodate a front outward facing carry.

The Skinny

The Infantino – Fusion comes in at less than one-third the price of other models, but still provides a full-featured carrier. If you’re hoping to breastfeed in your baby carrier, a design with inner straps like the Infantino is definitely not going to help. It’s not as restrictive as some of the new BabyBjorn designs with a full mesh panel, but it’s still going to get in the way. As a mom of a toddler son and an infant daughter, I use the Beco Gemini baby carrier almost daily. I love using it for everyday errands, for hiking and traveling, and for taking care of tasks around the house. LÍLLÉbaby’s belt is well thought out, with a really big lumbar support pad. This is a nice perk when you’re carrying a heavy toddler on a long walk. Another benefit of this design is that you can remove the lumbar pad if you don’t like it — other carriers just have padding built into the front section of the belt. Parents love soft structured carriers because they go on fast, they're easy to adjust, and they're more comfortable than wraps or slings for longer wears with heavier babies. Dads also tend to prefer soft structured carriers over wraps and slings because they feel a bit manlier—more like wearing technical gear than like wearing your wife’s favorite accessory.

When you learn how to adjust the fit and support of a baby carrier, it can really transform the time spent holding your baby. Babywearing not only frees your hands, but it gives your baby a chance to see the world around you while still being protected and supported. The Lenny Lamb Preschool Carrier is an ultra-adjustable carrier from 15 months to at least 7 years – with an impressive upper weight limit of 30kg (66lbs). It’s oh-so-soft and suitable for dads and mums from a size UK 6 to 24. They also look very beautiful, which helps. The waistband and shoulder straps are pretty chunky, so this one’s best for average to plus size parents. If you’re a more petite mum carrying a large child, opt for a Lenny Lamb or a Tula. Let’s start with the basics before we get judgmental. These facts can help you make a buying decision, but they don’t include our opinion at all. Just the facts, baby. If you’re a UK size 8-10 or below, or you’re 5’2” / 158cm or under, these are my top recommendations for you.A note on hip dysplasia: Some babywearing advocates have started to downplay the importance of this point, as there’s now some evidence against the effect of swaddling and posture on the development of hip problems in babies who aren’t born with existing dysplasia, but the wider seat offered by hip-healthy carriers is comfortable and certainly can’t hurt. This leads us to the other benefit of babywearing: it’s a great workout! But with the right carrier, you’ll forget about how much weight you’re lifting and just enjoy the time spent close and seeing the world together. Important features to consider Your baby’s latch, their age, the size of your breasts, the position of your nipples, the length of your baby compared to the length of your torso…. it really is an art, not a science! Little uses the acronym STOP to remind caregivers of the ways in which they can keep their babies safe and comfortable in a carrier: GOOD TO KNOW: All my Best Baby Carriers tend to fit all dads as, generally, men tend to have ‘easier’ rectangular torsos – i.e. fewer boob, waist and hip contours to consider!
