Add 8 drops from Ammonia Test Solution #2, holding the dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniformity of drops. The first time you decided to keep fish, you probably didn’t know anything about the water quality in your fish tank.

Fish continually release ammonia directly into the water through their gills, urine, and solid waste. Uneaten food and other waste also add ammonia to the water. A natural way that your aquarium handles this ammonia is through the biological filter, or natural aquarium cycle. However, as with any natural processes, imbalances can occur. This is why it’s important to regularly test for the presence of ammonia, which can spike unexpectedly in your aquarium. As soon as it is detected, ammonia should be removed, otherwise it will damage your fish’s gill membranes and harm their respiration, which can eventually result in fish death. Even small amounts of ammonia stress fish, suppressing their immune systems and increasing the likelihood of disease outbreaks. You can remove ammonia from your tank by performing a partial water change, and by dosing with a solution specifically designed to treat ammonia. Test frequently for high ammonia using API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT.

pH is the measure of acidity in your water. A pH reading of 7.0 is neutral, a pH higher than 7.0 is alkaline, and a pH lower than this level is acidic. It is important to keep your aquarium at the appropriate pH level to ensure optimal water quality for your specific fish species, as different types of fish require different pH levels for their habitats. API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT will enable you to test the pH levels in your water as often as needed!

We highly recommend testing your aquarium or pond water regularly, to ensure it remains a safe and healthy home for your fish. Testing of levels such as pH, ammonia, and nitrite can help you determine whether you may be overfeeding, and alert you to any potential issues early, when they are more easily treatable. If your water tests show that any of your water parameters are very high or very low, it is important to take steps to correct conditions for fish health and wellbeing. Monitoring the water chemistry of the aquarium or pond will allow you to catch problems before they develop. Read the test results by comparing the color of the solution to the High Range pH Color Chart. The tube should be viewed in a well-lit area against the white area of the chart. The closest match indicates the pH of the water sample. Rinse the test tube with clean water after use. Learn to raise pH levels effectively in various simple methods in a different article. High-Range pH TestI would imagine many people are in the same situation with their aquarium PH. I wish that instead of providing two separate tests that supposedly span from 6.0 PH to 8.8 ph, they would instead provide a narrower range in one single test, say from 6.5 to 8.0. While some aquarist certainly have tanks that fall outside this range, I think it would meet the needs of most. API PH Test Kit (Low Range) : This is the test for PH levels from 6.0 to 7.6. It has enough solution for around 250 tests.

You can use API SALTWATER MASTER TEST KIT to test parameters in an aquarium with reefs; however, for best results, it is recommended that you use API REEF MASTER TEST KIT. The bottom line is that API’s freshwater master test kit has been invaluable to me as I got our aquarium setup for the first time, guiding it through a fishless cycle, and continues to be useful for my periodic testing to make sure things are working well. I’ve had a passion for aquariums ever since my first Goldfish in a bowl! Through years of experience I’ve learned how to care and provide for my fish, spoiling them along the way! The joy of this hobby comes from knowing my fish are happy and healthy, growing and thriving. The color chart is very easy to understand and is waterproof, so you can keep it to test the water later on. The real positive of the liquid master test kit is the pricing. It is a bit tough to breakdown the number of available tests in the bottles. API advertises ‘over 800 tests’ but this is for all the separate tests combined. Each bottle has 37ml of fluid, but they each utilize different numbers of drops per test. I think the Nitrate test would run out first and I estimate that it would be good for around 80 tests. Other tests would last much longer. You need to test the water frequently to make sure that the bacteria are doing a good job, breaking the fish’s waste into safe components that won’t harm the inhabitants of the tank. A pdf of my instructions is located here for those who would like to print one out for their kit. Please note that the my simplified instructions do not include all the important details that are included in API’s instructions; you really do need to read their literature carefully the first few attempts. After a few tries, you will get the rhythm down and become faster at completing the test. We recommend that you take a few minutes each week to monitor your aquarium conditions and create a better underwater world for your fish. Testing your aquarium water has never been so easy or accurate! In new aquariums, the nitrate level will gradually climb as the biological filter becomes established. A nitrate level of 40 ppm (mg/L) or less is recommended for freshwater aquariums. High Nitrate Solution
