Cut two small tear-shaped pieces of the dark brown felt and glue them on one end sandwhiching the wire with the two pieces. Measure the circumference of the head that will be wearing the front bodysuit. Divide that number two and draw a dome shape on your light brown/tan felt. The base of the dome should be that head circumference measurement divided by two. The height of the dome should be about 6 inches. Next I worked on the head, which was a giant mistake. The head should’ve been done first, as it took me the longest and was the most intensive! For the slinky coil of the costume, we will not need the entire slinky. I recommend cutting about 12 loops/coils off of the slinky to use for the costume. We will then be wrapping the slinky in grey fabric tubes. Now cut two circles out of the tan/light brown felt. On one of the circles cut a slit to allow the wire to slide in and come out of the middle. Glue the two circles together sandwiching the wire but make sure the wire is using the slit to come out the center of the top circle. You can coil the tail into a spring-like shape. The last step is to add a piece of velcro on the bottom of the circle. This will allow the tail to attach to the bodysuit. Note: The velcro will attach right to the felt so you can move the tail around wherever you want.

A rounded trash can lid from my apartment was the basis for the very detailed Slinky Dog head. I had quite some problems with this, because once I paper mache’d over the lid I could not get it off! I had to recreate this several times, using Vaseline underneath the layers hoping it would pop off but for some reason this still did not work! I decided to move on as I was wasting valuable time. The image above shows the basic shape we are going for when cutting out the suit. We will fold the felt in half and cut along the fold which will prevent us from having to do a shoulder seam. We will start by cutting a rectangle shape. The width of the rectangle should be your waist measurement divided by 2 and then add three inches. (Example: If my waist measurement was 22 inches my width would be 14 inches. 22/2 + 3). The height of the rectangle is the height (shoulder to mid-thigh) measurement. I have been an artist for years and I love to create and push myself beyond my limits! I have made original costumes in the past, but this year I really wanted to go all out! I am a senior art major at James Madison University, and my focus is in studio art, graphic design, and art history. My classes take up almost all of my time and I am constantly creating art in many forms. Though, I rarely get to do for myself and create art just for the love of art and not just for an elaborate assignment!This year for Halloween I decided to change this unfortunate fact and do something completely original and completely hobby related. For once, this meant no school assignments, no critiques, no crazy deadlines, this was going to be just for me and I couldn’t of been more excited! I began my research months before Halloween. I surfed the internet for all kinds of characters I loved from all aspects of entertainment. Though, a lot of character ideas I came up with had already been produced and I really wanted to push myself to come up with a creative costume that had never been seen before! In the end, it was between Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon or Slinky Dog from Toy Story. I had to go with Slinky Dog, as he was an old time original and a great character in a movie I loved and that was obviously well known. It’s a possibility that Toothless will be my next year’s attempt ;) I was surprised to see that not one person had taken the time to make Slinky Dog work as a costume, with slinky parts and all. I knew I had a huge task ahead of me, but I was determined to make it happen. Make sure you have another piece of brown felt underneath so that you can cut out both sides of the hat at once. Cut about ½ inch around the dome line through both pieces of felt. You will then sew the two pieces together along the line. You can now flip the hat inside out so that the sewed seam is inside the hat. To create the fabric tubes, cut out strips of grey fabric that are 3 inches x 44 inches. Fold the fabric strips in half and use pins to hold the fold in place while you sew along the seams of each strip. Use a wooden dowel to turn the strips inside out. This will put the sewed seam on the inside of the fabric tubes.I never even made a single sketch, which is unusual for me, as I normally need some kind of basis. Instead I just studied pictures of Slinky Dog and was on my way. Due to the limitations of schoolwork, I started this project ONE week before Halloween. I did not realize at the time that this was absolutely not enough time for a full-scale paper mache’ project! All nighters were the only way this costume became a possibility and trust me I paid for it the next week!

Lights (This part is completely optional, but if you would like to wrap the slinky and tail in lights we recommend these lights.)Cut out two teardrop shapes for the ears out of dark brown felt. We recommend the ears be about 6 inches long. Now cut a slit on each top corner of the hat. The slit just needs to be big enough to slide a tab of the ear in and hot glue it in place. Every child thinks that certain favorite toys are really alive and can have adventures. Come on, admit it, you did! But what would you have done if they came to life like Andy's toys in Toy Story? What would your toys have done? Measure the height of each from shoulder to mid-thigh. Measure the waist of each person and note these measurements down.
