About this deal

But it seems you can't really have all that 'success' without it tainting your perspective making it bent on revenge, fear or selfish ambition. For Michael to bring a character to life so much that in the audio book that you feel you love the guy and you can’t wait to see what he says and does next, is just beautiful. The book is quite interesting though as it charts his progress from regular employment, through the comedy scene and into the mainstream media. There's also the birth of his two sons and his incredibly supportive wife as they go from crippling debt to struggling to get on the property ladder as well as hilarious anicdotes about past neighbours and such along the way.

Although he means well his desire in chasing fame, wealth and status dominates his life and purpose which was sad to read as he doesn't necessarily present himself that way in his stand up. Michael McIntyre is easily one of my favourite comedians, pop him on the telly and I'm guaranteed to be in tears of laughter within seconds. It was a nice read, though with the exception of Addison, I never really felt like there was much effort to dive beneath the surface. I bought the first autobiography in print years ago, but the over-saturation of McIntyre made it find its way to the back of the shelves and then into loft boxes fairly quickly. He pushed Michael further and higher than he believed he could go and the love and appreciation Michael felt for him is very apparent.

I had previously read his other book which was written in a similar vein and this one follows on with the next part of his career. Perhaps he covered all this in his earlier one, though he says at the start that you don't need to have read that to read this. From a biography perspective, it was interesting to see his rise in showbiz and especially learn about his relationship with his agent, but I felt the book turned into a bit of a cycle of "my agent pushed me to do this new thing, I was uncomfortable but did it anyway, it went great and I made a lot of money then bought xyz with it and won this award". I found myself missing him, and the rest of the book felt like it lost its sparkle, though their was also more weight to it, with Michael having to figure out how to move forward with his career without Addison in his corner. I listened to the audio version, narrated by Michael and I'm so glad I chose this format over the print.

The book, therefore, is a continuation from where the previous book appears to have left readers – on the point when Michael is about to start becoming successful – up to the point when he really is successful.

It was actually one of the parts I liked the most, where he discussed that period where he hadn't found his audience yet, or perhaps they hadn't found him.

Being such a huge fan of Michael over the years it was wonderful to see behind the curtain of his famous jokes, amazing performances and shows that I love so much. Laugh along with Michael McIntyre as he lifts the curtain on his life in his long-awaited autobiography. I’m a fan of stand up comedians in terms of the art and the personalities involved, so when I’m in an autobiography mood I’m always happy to read tales and anecdotes from/of this type of performer. What I soon discovered when reading “A Funny Life (The Autobiography)” is that it’s not THE autobiography, but AN autobiography. I’m a huge fan anyway and was fascinated reading about his road to success as well as gaining an insight into Michael, the family man.

I’m by no means a super fan but I really enjoyed listening to how he rose from nothing to such highly acclaimed comedy stardom, fortune and fame.

His hit BBC1 show Michael McIntyre’s Big Show aired in 2016, going on to win a BAFTA for Best Entertainment Performance and a Rose D’Or Award for Best Studio Entertainment. Along the way, he opens his man drawer, narrowly avoids disaster when his trousers fall down in front of three policemen and learns the hard way why he should always listen to his wife.
