Kevyn Aucoin, America’s preeminent makeup artist on the 1990s, shares his secrets on the basics of makeup application and technique and how to use the fundamentals to create a wide range of different looks. Most artists use face charts to practice new looks. It saves time and makeup of using a real face (and also means you don’t need a model). If you’d like to get some real life practice, you’ll love this book.

Another great book, this one much more of a step-by-step tutorial for someone who wants to see the craft of makeup application broken down into bite-sized steps. This book is for the person who wants to look as fantastic as they feel. You’ll learn to approach makeup as a choice and a means of expression, not a need. There is no fancy vocabulary or industry jargon to decipher. Today the practice of makeup has become more popular with the rise of social media and many people are learning how to do makeup formally. Moral of the story is that the art of makeup can be learned, so if you are a makeup lover and want to up your game – makeup books are a great way to do that.

Classic Beauty is a bit more comprehensive than Face Paint, and I consider it to be a great reference book. It shows how history has molded accepted beauty rituals and patterns and the changes in cosmetics over the years. I don’t know about you, but I find that kind of thing SO fascinating! We've offered a few criticisms here, but that's not to say it isn't an excellent book. If you're interested in a career in makeup artistry---as opposed to just learning a few new ideas---this is an excellent choice.Bobbi Brown has decades of experience as a makeup artist/stylist and, of course, the creator of her own makeup and skin care line (which is fab). On top of that, the book also features an awesome 40-day food diary that you can use to start living your most beautiful life as well as a bunch of fun charts and lists to fill out, prompts for self-reflection, recipe cards, de-stressing techniques, sleep tips, and more. It’s fantastic!

Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin, and Hair from the Beauty Authority by Melissa Schweiger Working on eye looks is a practice all its own, so this chart book dedicated to just eyes is a great way to practice.
